Totally agree. I think everyone needs to decide for themselves what their priorities are and what their selection process is for breeding.

I did not know this. I have never heard this before. I am going to go out and check all 13 of my new BCM babies!

I think it probably varies some with different stock from different breeders. But all my hens and pullets have darker feet and legs than the roosters and cockerels and they are darker from the first week.

2 of my marans lay a nice, dark, freckled egg (shown in pics). The other one lays an egg that is somewhere between the color of my BOs and my RIRs with very light colored freckles.

Just wanted to say HI! and Happy New Year to you all!

I've been lurking here for a while now, and find your discussion fascinating! I'm quite interested in marans, but don't have the space to breed (nor am I allowed Roos in town in San Diego where I live). At some point I'd love to acquire some pullets who maybe aren't show quality but have the potential to throw nice, dark eggs. Maybe some of those mossies I've been reading about, or some coppers with too much copper...? Just putting it out there if anyone needs/wants to cull some youngsters...

Thanks for helping me learn--I'll be listening in!
