My prettiest lav orp did that to me last week. Just a bump, like you said, but I knew what he meant. I whipped right around, grabbed him by his leggs and his hackles and shoved his head deep into the water pail, gave him about a five second swirlie, something along the lines of a poultry version of waterboarding and just cast him down like a sack of sand and turned my back and walked away from him lying there trying to get his bearings and he has not even given me eye contact the rest of the week and I have not felt "that bump" since, knock on wood.

OH, those stories are great ! Yes perhaps water is the thing. I think I can catch the young one and maybe teach him a lesson he will remember. But the other one, the older one, he's a problem. He is just almost impossible to catch when he is out lose. He is lightening fast and he really comes at me. And then tuns and runs away as fast as he can. Little weenie.
I think maybe I'll try the bath with the younger one. That is too funny

You all crack me up. I love starting the day with great stories like that. You are great Patty--a swirlie? And good reflexs to boot.

Hmmm food for thought. I just may have to see how my Roo will do in an icey swirley tonight. I can do anything around that boy without feeling the wrath of him.

I ordered some in the first time they had them to see what they looked like compared with proper stock... not great at all... niether is Welp... the best hatchery birds I have seen personally is from McMurray... ... ... Murray had nice marans 4 years ago...(if my memory is serving me correctly) I got one in a rare breed assorment. Then a friend was ordering from welp so I ordered a few birds at that time.. one being a feather legged and again from Ideal... They appear to be crossed with something.. the egg color wasn't what I would call marans. I still have the big mcMurray bird.. Nice meatworthy and good #4 egg color....very consistant layer of a LARGE egg... she is in my breakfast pen. I didn't end up keeping the other two birds. She still lays regularly and is 4 this spring.

Who would be a good place to order Marans from if you just wanted to add a couple-I know that most hatcheries have a min. number you have to order. We think the egg color is neat and would like to add a couple of hens to the small flock we have currently.

I have heard that marans lay the darkest eggs of any chickens; is any maran type capable of this, or just the black copper?
