Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

I think my Marans lay darker eggs everytime they lay. They just started to lay about 4 days ago and everyday so far i have gotten at least 1 egg and everyday it is darker.
Take a look: (the lightest dark egg is their very first egg)

I think my camera makes my eggs look lighter than they are.. because believe it or not there is a blue egg in the far left in the pictures with the egg cartons but it almos looks white in these pictures!

when they first start laying, mine lay a few lighter eggs first until their little paint guns get primed.

You will get your most natural pictures in outdoor light. I rarely take egg pictures indoors. The flash washes them out, but if you don't use a flash, the pictures and eggs are too dark.

One of my pullets scared me today. About half way through the day, they had been turned out on the grass since the morning, one of my pullets started acting lethargic. She was standing around with her eyes half shut and didn't want to do anything. I thought, oh that's just great-she's sick.
After a little while she laid an egg, not in her nest but she just dropped one in the mud. So, I put her in her hutch and then she immediately laid second egg with no shell but just a really strong membrane. And after that she immediately became her chipper self again and started eating and drinking.
I don't know why I didn't take a picture of that egg. I have never gotten one of those before.

Nice looking Wheaton Eggs DROM. I wish my Copper Blacks would lay that dark.

So I just got the Meyer Hatchery catalog in the mail and they've got Marans in BC, BS, GC and White.

And Partridge Penedesencas.

The BC Marans in their photo are just a couple of culls.

Some of my BCM lay eggs that are high gloss and then others are that matte look, I have no idea what causes the difference, if its genetic or what. Anyone know what causes it?

As for the other egg with the whitish topcoat, I have some other breeds that do that with their eggs too.

I don't know, I get the feeling the matte vs glossy egg characteristic is genetic because my girl who lays eggs with a more matte finish always does, and my hens that lay the glossy coated ones pretty much always do. The egg coatings of course vary some but my birds seem to have a tendency to lay one way or the other consistently. I am wondering if many other people are experiencing this?
