I'm not sure of the recipe, but I think you could also make Golden Cuckoos with him and your BCMs. (?)

Just sayin'

Yep golden cuckoos!!!

Set me straight here but don't you have to start out with a golden cuckoo?

Don't cross the cuckoo with BC or you lose egg color.... that is a proven theory

It doesn't matter... You lose egg color when you cross... Experts tell me that it take 2 generation or more to fix the setback... I absolutely believe it.. You can get away with some crosses between the bc's and even the cuckoos but not the two...It is so tempting to do because of color sexing.... but the payoff is loss of egg color.

Jan is right.....egg color has been lost when crossing different varieties of Marans. It is my understanding that if the eggs are dark to begin with that the possibility of retaining egg color is very good, but the proof is always in the pudding and unfortunately we must wait 6 mos before we see proof of the pudding.

If I was going to cross them I would make sure that both parents came from a dark egg and that the hen lays a very dark egg and ready set go!

There is a guy in Oregon here that I got eggies from last year... I mean phenominal color... His BC hen... really hard to beat... I would love to have her... All he had at the time was the one hen and he used Cuckoo and I had a few offspring I hatched from them... Number 4's at best lay cycle... Starting from an 8 egg and crossed on a 7 or 8 roo... It is a heckuva setback.... I have seen it in action... Not that great.. Sounds good for now, but the work and time involved and others that have proven the theory... you could just as well spend the same money now and pick up what you need from a good reputable person.
