Absolutely a disappointing setback, but if a person had the time and space.... the fun would be in the project itself and seeing if all the hard work, trials and errors could produce dark egg layers and pretty birds.

I think Cuckoo is the last color I'd take, no matter how dark of egg it would lay.

I'm just sooo tired of seeing that barred color - Eeevverryone has it these days, I don't want to look like I have everyone's chickens.

I especially don't want someone asking me, "Are those Barred Rocks?" Also, hatcheries just ruined the Cuckoo reputation by having them and runing them.

So my question is - I have Wheaties, Blue Wheaties, and BC's in the bator. When they grow older and lay nicely for me, but I want to breed them - Am I just better off breeding bator-mates, or is it safe that I go looking for more Bev birds, say, from Bev herself or something? Or would it be safe to just look for another one claimed (and with good feedback) as pure Bev Davis?

Life is to short to have ugly chicken... The birds well.... they were UUUUUUGGGGLLLLYYYY!!!!!!!!! squared... The parent of themselves were nice, but that did not transfer to even one baby..... ICK!!! Ya gotta get something.... egg color... or good looks... NOT!!!

Dread Pirate Roberts:

Well the theory of choice is either a,b, c, breeding theory if you have enough birds... This is the way to go.. I have it written down somewhere... maybe someone else has a copy.... or #2 closed flock... Granted you wont have a diverse gene pool to draw on but with all the conformation problems coupled with the trouble of keeping egg color (most important) then you will weed out traits much quicker that are not desirable.

Interesting stuff, geebs. What a trip.

For my own thing here, I plan to just say "fuhgeddaboudit" and roll like the old-school French....I'm just let the birds do what they do and I'll sell all the lighter eggs as eatin' eggs, hatch the darkest of the dark, and see how it goes. I'm thinking positively about that, combined with the fact that they're on rotating pastures and I have unlimited access to fresh veggies and they're fed a custom diet of whole grains, kelp, fish meal, etc.

If you happened to catch any of the stuff posted by that cat "Resolution" a while back...that's how I'm gonna roll.

heh...I emailed his stuff to my exgf, who has the most awesome Cuckoo Marans on earth, and her response was, "who is this pot-smoking ornithologist?" hahahaha I might get busted for posting that, but then again, this is prolly the only thread on BYC that can handle a comment like that without any e-drama ensuing.

here's his thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=278349&p=1

he
also posted some stuff in this thread, a few pages back.

OK so, Hi-Sorry, I got done very late last night and then crashed. So, yes I am ready. The incubator has been running since last night. I do have to call Lyons Technology and ask them about a flashing light and if they say it's ok then at lunch I will load it up and take some pics and post on your hatch-festivus thread.

I picked out 20 eggs last night and ditched 17.

I absolutely adore my cuckoos! They are my best behaved birds and not nearly as "common" as my RIRs and BRs and BOs. So you do what you want but please try to not insult those of us that have them and love them! OK backing away now...
It's OK girls don't listen to them, Mommy loves you!

It's not that I hate them, no - It's just that I wouldn't really want a barred chicken. I don't want something that looks like a Barred Rock (yes I know they don't, but to 98% of the world they do.

) I'm sure they're lovely birds.
