Thanks cp. With marans eggs, do they get darker once they start laying more? Or is this pretty much what Im going to be getting from now on?

Thanks, I love them. The eggs I got from you were nice and dark and the birds are so friendly. Towards the end of the month I would like to buy some more eggs from you if possible. Maybe a dozen or two?

I collected a few eggs today. I sat them on the picnic table. Then, like a dummy, I pushed them off as I was putting a piece of lumber up on the table!

At least I got a couple more, a couple hours later. I think the one may be a double yolker. It came from a new layer, her 2nd egg.

I've heard back from a lot of folks that the chicks from my eggs did not produce any webbed toes even with good numbers... only one person has said that they had more than one in their hatch (Mahonri). He was actually my test hatcher (more or less) since I had not hatched out of my new roo myself yet (he claimed some eggs I promised him way back and had a date in mind that did not allow me to hatch first). So his were a complete surprise. I contacted others that got eggs after his and told them to be on the lookout and offered refunds for any disappointing hatches... Everyone got good chicks and not one person asked for money back. So I did a 44 egg test hatch here and got one chick with partial webbing.

Today someone told me that there is a thread somewhere where people are discussing my birds webbed toes... but I have not seen it... can't find it in search... and have not heard a peep out of anyone else to say that they actually HAVE a chick from me with webbing. Very frustrating since I need hatch dates to trace lay dates to figure out which change I made (if any) affected the chicks.

So if anyone has webbed toes from me or hatches any please let me know. I have questioned whether I should sell eggs until this is all worked out... but I have not seen a perfect Marans flock yet and these birds have a lot to offer.

Maybe... going to look now... Thanks!

Yes it is causing me some stress... not a getting an ulcer kind of stress but I sure do not have peace about it... I will go ahead an post here one more time for anyone I missed... If you got Black Copper Marans eggs from me and were disappointed in ANY way I would love to hear from you so I can make it right.

I did find Germaines post and yes She got eggs from me but I heard back from her this morning and the chick with fused toes IS NOT mine. She had one chick with fused toes from another seller and cut the toes apart and posted about it. This is a problem evidently in feather legged breeds and is linked to the gene that causes feathering. It appears to be common. Since I posted about it I have had several PMs to say " I did not get fused toes from you but I got chicks with fused toes from eggs from another breeder." So evidently this must be a problem for lots of folks. I contacted the person I got my eggs/birds from about the toe issue and did not get a reply at all.

So here is my conclusion: I will continue to offer eggs. Now that I believe that I have removed the pullet with the toe issue I am not worried so much but even if I see it again I will simply cull for it the same was I do for mossy color or anything else I am working out of this flock. Over time I will have better and better birds. If someone wants to use my flocks eggs to start a flock of their own they may. No promise that you may not have to do some work yourself. Feel free to copy this statement into any other thread where you beiieve it may help someone else. If you know of a discusion going on anywhere about fused toes (my birds or someone elses) I wouls love to be a part of it so that we can work this out together.

Thanks for following along with me as I sort through all of this.

Peace and Blessings,
Melissa

You have a hen that throws fused toes you need to find her that means alot of hatching and knowing which egg comes from what hen..I had a C1 that threw fused toes singled it down to 1 hen what a project..I have hatched lots and lots of chicks and havent had 1 with fused toes since...

3chickens I think you missed the post above where I discussed the fact that fused toes are an expressed trait... in other words the hen you had that was responsible had to have had some fusion of her own even if very minor and hard to detect. I believe that I have found and isolated the pullet who has been the culprit in my flock. I have decided how I will deal with the problem in the future. I believe that my birds are light years advanced to some for feather color, body type, etc. so will continue to breed my birds and offer eggs. The toe issue is out there and only those prepared to deal with it from my birds or others should probably work BCMs right now. I am glad that you have worked it out of your flock at least for now.
