That's what people are talking about when they discuss "mossy" BCs. It does seem to correlate with carriers of the wheaten gene, but that is not proven to be a 100% correlation. It also *appears* to correlate with layers of very dark eggs, so if you get a pullet that looks like that you might want to throw her in the laying pen.

Kathyinmo what fun hatchig with the grandbaby!!!

Good luck!!!

I thought this guy was pretty handsome, dont have him, though, he's with a breeder, now. I bet he is even nicer now that he is older, kinda kicking myself
for thinking I had enough roos at the time. I have his sisters. They are very nice Davis-typey Splashes.
One of them lays the dark egg to the far right, bottom. Not too shabby for a Splash!!

So, if he's a roo. . . Keep or no keep? I don't really want a mossy looking roo, but if he gives great egg genetics and I can breed out the mossiness that would be an interesting project. I've heard of mossy BCs, but don't know much on them besides that it is physically an undesired trait.

Cottagegarden: Beautiful eggs! And for a Splash, that is an impressive egg on the right!

OK, 598 pages I will never find my answer. My babies are about 6 weeks old now, hatch date Feb 7. When and how can I tell if I have hens or roos? They are Black Copper, with feathered legs.

Thanks!

Thanks guys on the eggs, fun to share this time of year, the already colored eggs.
I doubt we would even have chickens if it wasnt for the kids liking to get the different colored ones.
As for your cute lil guy..he will make you the prettiest Olive Egger chicks you have ever seen but unfortunately that coloring is what is cropping
up and needs cleaning out of the Marans gene pool.
Its probably not worth trying to breed it out since it will keep sneaking back on you.

You should tell by now, as your Marans are a week older than mine. The boys should already get fleshy pink combs and waddles (also quite large ones) and should develop a little better. Also, mine are starting to bicker and raise their hackles like boys. The girls I can tell during this by them, having not interest in the boys' "silly games." Sadly it is easier to sex my Ameraucanas, as their combs come through so much better, and they do the rooster "chook chook" thing when they find food. The Marans don't yet.
