That's why you cull the non barred ones though I don't really know much either yet I've just been doing the reading part. I haven't seen an unpure brown barred cock I understand the leg bars but still that's many chicks that become disposable only because they came out the wrong color that's raising a lot of butcher birds...I understand Braden could get the cocks to breed true but not the hens....the gene must be incomplete recessive. I know my Equine color genes just starting chicken but it isn't like learning it the first time many similarities between them and how they are passed along. Birds are much faster to mature I will know sooner when I do something right or wrong. Color is the icing first I must get the cake right....

My little fella is finally getting his coppering! You barely see a small spot on his back right behind the neck.. And when you move the neck feathers there's a bunch

That is indeed a very handsome fella!!! What line are you raising or do you know? What a huge eye on that little fella... congrats on the coppering...I like them to copper out late like that...you get a better specimen usually that way.

Thanks for that bit of experience for me about the coppering coming in late... It really is encouraging because I'm not so much after the darkest egg but one with nice even coloring and more so a bird that can be show quality, because I am doing the Marans project for my 12 yo to show and sell his own Marans birds and eggs... He gets to keep the money and reap the rewards of showing. Other than the little Cochin bantam that hatched with the Marans, I am only allowed one roo(agreement with Hubby) and he likes the black and red/copper look of our temporary Wellie roo alot... So if he doesn't like this blC boy I'll just keep one of the BC roos since they're similarly colored to the Wellie.
This particular batch was eggs purchased from sebrightmom... She has Presley and Valentine lines. 100% hatch on strong healthy chicks from this batch. Kept 4 out of 8 so far... Then bought from Ebay BCMs from Wade Jeane line(in the ad it said Wade Jeane C-1 I'm new to this so don't know what that meant) that are show stock. And finally will be buying from Raven1 who also has Jeane birds, either that or will get more blues from one of the Marans groups in my Yahoo.

Question. I just bought some really nice Black copper chicks. Two of these chicks are not really black, but have a very dark brownish overcoat of a sorts on them. They are really nice and I am curious what they will look like when they get older. They are only about 3-4 weeks old. They are suppose to be from the Wade Jeane line of birds and I saw the parent stock and they are really nice. Any ideas as to why these two have the brownish color on them, or are they just getting their copper early.

That is a trademark of the Jeanne line.. They will likely be black just like any other black copper.... It is a throwback in genetic from waaaay back... Resolution has a thread on it if you are interested in reading about it. I find that my best birds.... pullets that lay a "bright" egg have come from just that... enjoy!! I hope you get really nice darkies from it!!!! Congratulations on your new birds.

: Are you sure you are not getting this confused with birds born with a ginger colored head.

Let's see a picture so Marquesella and I will know which scenario we are talking about... I had forgotten about the ginger-headed thing.
