I wondered when black copper marans pullets tend to get the rusty coloring in their necks? This pullet is 2 months old and first marans of this color I've had.

Three of my newly added marans in the flock don't demonstrate the standard coloring of a true FBCM. Regarding mossiness (too much shade of copper feathers?) Has anyone have photos to share of a full-grown hen with this type of feather pattern? I'm just curious on how will my 12-week old pullets will look like when they are fully matured. Will they lay darker eggs or is this just a myth?

They are not pure bred Black Copper Marans, the presence of the Pattern gene Pg is obvious by the juvenile autosomal barring. They are likely to look more pencilled when adult. Feather pattern has no relationship with egg colour.
Sorry.

I don't have wheaton in mine... NONE anywhere... I have hatched enough eggs ... literally 100's and I have never throw a "sport". does the cockerel with the wheaton have a two tone hackle color.. The french are sooo very clear on that as well. I have often wondered if that is releted to the wheaton gene as it is so prevalent and you hear alot about the "straw" color...If that doesn't give a visual cue of the genes and what lies inside.... I surmise it does. I may be completely off base here... If there is anybody out there to prove or disprove that theory... please have at it.

Actually what I was referring to when I responded your post about people mentioning genetic markers for dark eggs was the leg color. I know there are things said about plumage as well but, at least what I was referring to on the last page, was a very reddish color on the legs and in between the toes.
I have a BCM rooster with very red reticulate scales and somewhat lighter legs. They are still slate colored on the top, but really reddish in between the toes. I've heard people say in a very absolute way that reddish color is always related to a wheaten gene, I've heard from others that it is a characteristic that is common in birds that carry genes for dark eggs but I have to wonder if it is also just related to very good vascular health.
Anyway, reddish/pink legs are not a characteristic of the BC or Black genotypes and I suppose that is why the French say they "tolerate" but don't prefer the dark legs in the BCsand Blacks. But, that's kind of a curious choice of words. It's a bit like saying, I prefer my bananas to be purple but I will tolerate yellow.

ha ha... Purple bananas... Yes I found the wording curious so I brought it into several different translators... I like purple bananas too!!! I hadn't read anything about the red being related to wheaton... that is new to me... Although you see the shanks are light in the wheaton... I haven't had any wheaton off my roo. so I think he at least dispells that theory on the leg color and wheaton. He was from an amazing dark egg so all thing being equal my offspring from him should be laying this summer... we shall see... I will keep you posted Drom. How is your BHB flock doing... By the way...LOVE YOUR BIRDS!!! Any new pix to post???? any new babies??? I am not taking very many of my newbies as they are quite young and I don't want to stress them.... I know they are the last I will be able to get from Donna.

Thank you for the feedback Blackdotte. Pencilled, I'll take that anytime ( Do any marans breeder here have pics of a full grown hen with this type of feather?). It will be a wonderful addition to my flock. There's nothing to be sorry about, really. As long as she lays a dark brown egg as dark as the the egg she hatched from, I'll be very happy.

Is there anyone here from West Virginia with any Marans? I am in Pocahontas county and have incubated ten black copper marans eggs and ten blue copper marans eggs for a grand total of six little fuzzybutts! I am very happy that I did get some chicks since this was my first time and also using a little giant. However I would love to try again with some eggs that I could pick up in person instead of shipping. Please let me know...Thank you all very much. I have been reading here for a few months and you've helped me out a great deal. My second hatch of Ameracaunas gave me fifteen of twenty on shipped eggs.
I just really want to get a nice flock of non hatchery marans that produce well.
