Well, I have a couple of them and I am told that they will not have a completely correct Wheaten genotype and won't be quite right. But an Olive Egger project sounds like a good way to find a useful purpose for your birds.

Thank you.

But I never have understood who Henneymote is. Maybe some day you can explain it to me

Hey, everyone! I have one beautiful black little hen and I'm waiting for her to lay her first egg. We named her Boo because she always seems startled and is usually wandering off by herself lost. She's a mess! She's 22 weeks now and I'm hoping for an egg one day. I had three to start with but the other two were roos and one went after my son so they both got rehomed.

This may be a silly question but.... how do you pronounce Marans? I thought it was one way but got corrected. I'm not sure that person knew what they were talking about. Can someone type it out phonetically?

Thanks! I'd love some more hens but I'm not sure if I want to go through the process of hatching and raising. My kids have a tough time with rehoming anyone and I have way too many roosters already that I don't know what to do with. I'm sure that's a common theme here!

Well, you will notice, that I said "if they are only from her line".....there is the "if" there....its obvious that from the breeder to anyone after that things can be bred in & changed. The poster asked about Bev's line and I responded with my experience with stock directly from her.

I have had Bev Davis black coppers for over 3 years, and never hatched a wheaten. I am 100% confidant that if your birds are only her line, will not get any Wheatens.
The Wheatens that pop up are from the Jeane line. Its getting pretty common for wheatens to hatch from that line, so you know that somewhere, a wheaten was in the mix.

I bought mine directly from Bev. If you are getting eggs or birds second hand, then you don't know what was mixed in.

Ahaha, you know I have to make a comment here-it is really kind of futile to spend the time defending the purity of this line or that. Because the bottom line is, once you sell eggs from your stock, or release or sell any animal from your breeding program, you relinquish your control. And I think in general breeders are fairly controling and opinionated people; and of course I say this as someone who has bred animals for years, so I'm not criticizing others by saying it, it is simply an observation I've made about most of us.
But anyway, when you release your stock to others, you relinquish control of your breeding standards; your ideas, your opinions about how the stock from your line should be handled. I'm very glad that there are breeders who are willing to do this so we can all enjoy the breed. But it is an inevitability, a certainty that you will have absolutely no control over what others do with stock from your line. And the only way to avoid this if you find it to be annoying, offensive or unfair, is to not release or sell any of your stock.

Hey DROM I sent you a pm however I then realized that I have a page (be it a small blurb) regarding Hennymote.... In the interest of avoiding a Hijacking I will leave it at that!!! I do need to elaborate and update the Hennymote page.

I received 13 BCM chicks hatched on 5/24 from Green Fire Farms. Three of them aren't much bigger now than then, but they do have the same amount of feathering as the bigger chicks. Two are mid-size. And the rest are huge in comparison, probably 3-4 times bigger than the tiny ones. What do you think caused this? Bad breeding, different lines. I'm brand-new to Marans. If I knew how to post a pic I would. Very Strange... Thanks Brenda

THe little ones might not be getting enough to eat to catch up. Sometimes the pecking order starts early. I saw several of my bigger chicks push the tiny ones out of the way more than once. i finally had to separate them into two groups so the littles could get enough food. A couple of weeks and I was able to put them all together again.

I don't know if they'll breed true or not but I just put some eggs in the bator so I'm going to try to find out
PM me with a price list for some wheaten eggs I'd like to have some true wheatens my self.

I don't think they would breed true since they have so much BC in them. Also looking at them they look like they are kind of sooty, like there is black leaking through the wheaton. But they could be the start of a project, it will just take more work than starting with true wheatons.
