In the mix of chicks that I got in February, I did not get any Cuckoo hens. If I were going to go that direction, what would you recommend? I'd like to have a variety of colored egg layers. I have a couple of phoenix hens and I understand that they lay lightly tinted eggs, 3 EEs, and a variety of brown egg layers. I am in love with the avatar pics that show the different color eggs. I would love to be able to give family and friends cartons of eggs that look like that!

If you added some Cuckoo hens and you liked their egg color you would be all set. Say she lays a little lighter egg than you are looking for you could always purchase some other variety of Marans to add a darker egg to your basket, but beware just because someone may sell them as Marans and say that they came from a dark egg....does not mean that they will infact lay a dark egg. IMO when purchasing Marans a person really needs to do their homework on breeders their birds. Marans can be pretty spendy and it is very disappointing to hear what peeps pay for their birds to be totally bummed when they get their first egg.
You could also add some Welsummers to your flock for Terra Cotta colored eggs.

I just added Wheaten Marans/Blue Wheaten, but I do love my welsummers... The pullets I got on the Wheaten/Blue Wheaten are only 12 weeks old, so i dont know their egg color yet.

I just received my bc eggs from bargain....awesome packing job.

I have two roos that are straight Bev Davis lines and I hope to get some pullets from this hatch to put them with.

I feel your pain....recently lost mine on a trip out to do chores very late one evening and to get a picture emailed off to someone that I had promised it to by the next morning. The next morning as I am at my puter and ready to email photo, I realize my camera is nowhere to be found. *thinking to self* #&%$!!! of course, the only place to have dropped it....in the coop.

Dragging all the way out to the coop and cussing under my breath to self....I just know it fell out of my pocket when I bent under the roosts to get an egg that some new layer just had to lay there! Yep, there it was...the only visible sign of it was the wrist strap.

Now....will someone please tell me how to I am suppose to go about washing off my digital camera??? I don't think my DH would appreciate the accidental purchase of that new digital camera that I have had my eye on for months.

Oh Nooo!! I just went out to the coop to collect eggs from the coppers and a blk copper hen about took my hand off lol. She squawked at me and is sitting tight in a nest box. Haha I just promised dh that I wouldn't hatch out any more chicks until fall. He is gonna think I did this on purpose rotfl...

Well I have an incubator full and I wasn't setting anymore until fall either. I have about 30 birds to sell not old enough to cull though getting ready for the big freezer camp run those are old enough my feed bill will go down a little. I did get another egg today this one is a little bigger and way darker the other one looked like a golf ball....maybe I shouldn't put those in the box

Are these eggs you bought or hatched from your own birds? I'm asking because the cockerel doesn't look right to me either. I would guess you have cross birds if I didnn't know the parents. Where did the parents come from ? Did they come from black coppers? I would guess that might be what is happening. But, I could be wrong.

NeeleysAVLChicks: Both cockerels ,& neither look like any variety of Marans. Possibly inter variety crosses of Marans, or just crossbreds.

outback hatcher: Pullet & second cockerel, both very poor quality examples, again possibly inter variety
crosses of Marans, OK to sell as back yard fowl. First cockerel looks reasonable

Hey gang,
I thought I would share this. I got Blue Marans Chicks from Bishopchickens here on BYC back around May 10th. I have one little roo that has been crowing (quite well I might add, since about June 24th.) Thats 6 weeks old! His waddles and comb are big and dark red and he has a nice deep crow for such a young fella. He looks true to his breed.

Do you think this early maturing genetics of his would pass on to his offspring????? We are considering keeping him as a breeder. (Nice personality and friendly for know.) (Likes to be rubbed between his waddles..)
