I have just (about an hour ago) hatched my first Cuckoo Maran. There are two others zipping and 1 other PIPed. they are due tomorrow so I have hope for the other 4 that have yet to start. I am soooo excited about these chicks. This is my first attempt at hatching Cuckoos. The first time was my first hatch and none hatched. The second time, I had my humidity too high and they didn't make it. This time, I DID IT! Hooray.

Congratulations! I love Cuckoo Marans! Where did you get the eggs? The cuckoo's are sooo cute - and my adult rooster is huge and sweet! Keep us posted and post PICS!

Number two just hatched. Both appear to be the same color, but one is very wet. How different is the color supposed to be? I got the eggs from a local chicken enthusiast. She gave them to me for free all three times. What a good sport. She is going to be so excited when I call her tomorrow.

The Cuckoo Roosters that I have seen and read about are definitely a lighter color, especially as they get older - I have four teens right now, and only one is darker - but a couple of the lighter ones have teeny combs and no other signs of rooishness?? I will wait til it's too obvious to deny any more to decide!
I've been reading BYC and the post's about hens crowing, and decided that ALL of my birds are girls now, just some of them that crow dont lay eggs! That way I dont have to rehome anybody when they grow up more!! I'll just remember that sometimes hens crow too!

I couldnt tell at hatch which ones were which, and some of mine are mixes, not true Marans. Hope yours are all what you want them to be!

Babies are precious, but I cant tell what is a boy and what is a girl? I'll wait til they crow or look like my big boy to decide!

I have Cuckoos from several different breeders - All of my chickens share a pet area with my other pets. The goats are enjoying a dust bath in the chickens dust pool, where I mix Oyster Shell, Diatamaceous Earth, and pine shavings for them to dust in. Unfortunately, they like to add little goat nuggets to the mix too....

This is a lighter teen and a darker teen, I'm still not sure what sex?

A much lighter coloring than my big girls, could it be a rooster?

Another teenager..........

And my Cuckoo Rooster - he's been accused of looking like a sex link, but he's a Cuckoo Marans........

Very Nice looking critters.

I have been told that the lighter colored ones are the cockrells and the darker ones are the pullets.

And I have noticed on my chickie-pigs that the lighter colored ones also seem to be developing larger combs. Goats are cute in the dust bath, it's nice they get along with the chickens. Your rooster is handsome.

Man, I hope this means something. Today is the first day I saw pullets checking out the nest box. I put it up a few weeks ago and so far Lightning is the only one I saw in there one time. They love it, but only as an alternate route to and from their roost so far. I grabbed my camera to capture the moment. These girls seemed happy to hang out in there when they saw me, didn't cut and run or act shy. Hopefully... maybe... some eggs would be nice...
