I've also used the glass pieces (flattened drops) that they use in vases.

Actually, I stole the glass pieces I use in my waterers for chicks now out of my husband's Magic game (they use them as markers). He wasn't using them and I suppose I could slip them back when the chicks are done...Shh...

i dont use em. my quail never seem to drown. they drink just fine and do well without em. i used them once and it just makes it more dibuttfficult to keep the water clean.... now with button quail i more than likely will use them.

my quail poke their beak into the egg then put it in the water cup
what should i do
i was thinking marbles in the bowl

For chicks I use the glass pieces in a single layer in the top of a jam/spaghetti jar lid. They go between the spaces and drink.

After about a week, I switch to a plastic waterer for cage birds that you can get at Petco/Petsmart. It sits flat on the bottom of the cage and you can rig something up (currently I use tape) to keep it from tipping over, if needed. The spout is probably about an inch long and as thick as a pencil. I don't think that you would need a marble for this type of waterer.

But from your other posts, it sounds like you have adult button quail. I have coturnix, so they are a bit larger. They don't have a problem after they about a week old.

I know the Quail Lady uses rabbit type waterers with the ball at the bottom. Perhaps this would be a good solution for your egg drowning/murdering problem! I would watch them closely if you switch to make sure that they have figured out how to use the waterer and are actually drinking.

It could be that the quail get the egg stuck on the beak and are using the waterer as leverage to "rub" it off. That's what my parakeets do when they get something stuck to their faces. They rub their faces on the perch or side bars of their cages.

+1, I never used anything either. 100'S of quail raised and never had one drown... Now that probably just put a wojo on my future chicks..... Better go knock on wood.... Bill
