March 2017! Hatch with us!

Day 19 here. I just upped the humidity about 10 minutes ago when I started hearing cheeps. 13 out of 19 legbars made it to lockdown from shipped eggs (although I have my doubts about 2 of them), and 6 of my own Swedish flowers. I have the best luck if I wait until internal pips before lockdown. I have a cruddy old little giant still air incubator. I refuse to get a nicer one. I like the challenge.

Nice. :thumbsup I have a bunch of stuff like that around my house. I have a can opener that the hand turner broke off.... but, I still keep both pieces and can still make that thing open a can. See, no need to buy a new one!!
Awesome on your "going into lockdown rate" with the legbars. I may end up trying again with her. She warned that there might be some surprises since they hadn't been in the breeding pen very long, and she was right. They're darn cute though!
My most current hatch in progress is a batch from Papas, two of which have been malpos. One didn't make it because it happened last night and got membrane caught on its beak. The second one I did some interfering with, so now it's sitting in the bator with enough shell cracked to help it get plenty of air. Every hatch is a challenge!

I wonder if I will get any surprises since it's just 1 week longer. How did you know? Is it pretty obvious?

I had never hatched legbars before, so I was just thinking I didn't know what I was looking for, especially with the male/female diversity. I now know they look almost exactly like Bielefelders (chipmunk girls, very blonde/gray boys) and that my confusion was the mixes. She was fabulous about it, and offered more eggs free - also gave me a glimpse of potential fathers - she has some incredibly beautiful stock. I want to be done hatching soon though, so I probably won't even worry about it.

Well I thought I was done with the rescue of my Dutch bantams eggs I had rescued all 11 eggs all cold and abandoned. I was told to give it a shot and there might be hope yet for them as long as they don't freeze well I did and have been blessed with 8 chicks!! I was happy but decided not to remove the three that didn't hatch because I still have other eggs in lockdown with them and I'll let them stay till saturday when the others start to hatch. No action all day long figuring that the three didn't make it so I layed down early getting myself ready for the long nights this weekend I got up around 1am glanced at the temp and humidity on the bator all was ok I went to the bathroom, made something to eat, was then came back in to watch some tv nothing happening right? Ohh NOOO! I catch movement in the incubator!! Well my other eggs are hatching! NOO! I have another bantam chick! And low and behold another starting to zip!! So as soon as the one hatches I'll pull them out and out of a lost brood of 11 eggs I now have 10 chicks!!!

Jeff actually makes sure his eggs are fertile before shipping, and won't ever send you old eggs. He's a good egg

I really like the multiple great reviews that Papa's eggs is getting. Can you speak to the question of (for me) being in the eastern south, if it would be too far to give a try with a few of their eggs?
Oh and has anyone seen and opined on my beginner incubator question (tucked into a longer post?

Loved reading your posts. My husband had to drag me away from the computer to go to bed.

Keep us posted with how you are doing with your baby(ies).

By the way - I lost three babies 5 months ago and had a single survivor who was dubbed "Miracle". I ran out and got her a companion - "Tribble". They were raised in the house. Long story - but I found out the hard way what mites can do to babies and was forced to bring the survivor inside and away from the danger zone until a proper quarantine could be conducted. This was then and then now.

Good luck!

Could you plz elaborate/expand some on this topic?
Ho do you discover mites? What causes them? What encourages them?
And, what thing/s did you change to get rid of them?
Thank you! and I'm glad you're having this happy successful time!

Every hatch has one of these

The lonely first chick. There's always an early hatcher, and I feel so sad for it as it wanders the incubator knocking on every shell saying, "Won't you come out and play with me?"
Oh little peeping person...you'll have so many siblings you won't know what to do...and Very soon. Then you'll be saying, hey you, you're standing on my foot, wanna move over just a tad?
