March 2023 hatch-a-long

I assume you would candle in your home where temps are not too chilli. So you do not need to worry about that. A broody hen does get up too usually once a day to eat, drink and poop.
nope, not chilly at all, if anything, its too dry lol we use wood heat and i was trying to do dry hatching but humidity in the room is at 15 and 10 in the incubator

@Lockdown/Candling: You have already got a few replies. But wanted to answer also: I take all the eggs out of the incubator. Candle them, mark the aircell and put them back in the incubator with the bigger part of the aircell up. And I do this without rush, as said the henn leaves her nest and take her time to eat, drink and poop an then returns.

When I take the eggs out to candle I put them into a clean egg carton, which ought to help keep them warm.

If the house is cold with the AC blowing on the table I put a dishtowel on top of the carton.

I only candle enough to make a yes/no decision. A dubious egg takes more time, but for a good one I stop as soon as I see evidence of a live chick and put it back into the egg carton.

I took 14 chicks out this morning. One is still trying to hatch. I just couldn't tell if all had hatched or not. That is the only bad thing about this incubator. You can't see what is happening in the back. But 14 out of 15 chicks is not bad. And who knows, maybe the last one will make it too until tomorrow morning. After that he or she is out of luck. Tomorrow morning those chicks will get their Marek immunization. And I will turn off the machine.
