March 2023 hatch-a-long

They're lovely. I have Bresse as well that I hatched in July and now the next generation is on the way in the incubator! They are a lovely breed, aren't they? Maybe I had low expectations because I started them for meat and was trying not to get too attached to them but I've been surprised at how interesting their personalities are.
I never thought I would love a “boring white chicken” breed as much as the Bresse! I hatched out a bunch last summer as well, boys for meat and girls for eggs. The girls are so sweet and curious, confident, good layers. All around a solid breed so far 👍 I hope you hatch lots of healthy chicks!

Here are the first three chicks from my own flock! The little orange fluff might be from my only red hen, and the yellows might be pure Bresse. I won’t know until their legs start turning blue, but I’m pretty sure my Bresse boy is the father of these.

We’ll see what kind of combs and colors the others come out with as the hatch dates get later…could start seeing some Wyandotte mixes

Thank you!

Yes, I agree with that! I thought I was just getting a meat breed but I'm so impressed with how good they are all round. Amazing foragers as well.

It does make the meat part harder, though. We planned all along to eat all but the best two cockerels so we were prepared for that and didn't get too attached but the next part of the plan was to replace half of the hens every year with the new pullets and eat the rest. I don't know how I'm going to do it!
