March 2023 hatch-a-long

speaking of chicks in demand, I have been trying to rehome 6 week old chicks for 6 weeks and haven't had one peep.

This is so surprising! But I know it’s very regional what people are looking for.

Me either. Yet the farm supply stores around here…like tractor supply can’t keep chicks in stock. They get a shipment in and then won’t sell any until 3 and by like 3:15 or earlier they are all gone. I have seen where they even have a chick limit on some.

Some stills from the video I captured this morning before I had to come in to work... There are 10 little babies popping around like popcorn in there now! Can't wait to go home!!

It was crazy earlier this year, but already TSC and the other feed store have chicks being discounted/free with a bag of feed. I’m hoping I didn’t miss out on selling my chicks 🤞🏼 We’re got a bunch of pullets we’re hoping to sell as coop ready too. Luckily most of the local community chicks that aren’t selling are BYM and I’ve got several pure pens set up

Gutted. 😭 One of incubators quit during the night, during lockdown. By the time I found it, the eggs were cold. I saw that four had externally pipped, and expected them all to be dead, but then saw the slightest movement from the beaks of two (sadly the other two were indeed dead). I popped the two live pipped, plus the rest of the eggs into another incubator and hoped for the best. Miracle of miracles by 8pm one of the two (a Barred Plymouth Rock) actually zipped and hatched. It's now in the broader with the Blue Australorp chicks.

Checked on them before bed and the chick from 2nd pipped chilled egg wasn't progressing and its cheeps were sounding weaker so I did a manual partial zip, just enough for the chick to get a toe hold on the edge of the shell, and I moistened the dried membrane, and returned it to the incubator. Just peeked in a bit ago and the chick has freed itself. It was past ready to hatch, and whilst still a bit weak, it's moving around and sounding stronger. I'm hoping it makes it, poor little chickie nugget...
