My last one to hatch (EE x EE) took very long - 2 full days after pipping. She ended up needing help even though I had her wrapped in a wet paper towel. She had some issues with her legs being stuck way out in front of her.

We did physical therapy by holding her legs in place for 20 mins every hour....

Now she can stand and walk on her own. We named her Flower because she was the late bloomer.
Is there a name on this condition? I have a chick that's doing that too. I assumed it was too long in the shell because it is the last one to hatch and I had to help it out. I'd like to research about it - what type of physical therapy, vitamins, etc can help. I was just assuming that it would eventually get stronger on it's own.

Have you guys ever had to use a boot to help curled toes.
I had read about this before and I have two chicks with 3 curled feet among them (one chick with one foot, other with both feet). I knew to use bandaids to flatten their toes while young and they will likely improve within days. This is the first time I've ever seen it (I've seen one toe curl outward to the side but did nothing for it since the chick was otherwise fine). The one with one boot is running around fine in the brooder with the other 25 chicks. The one with two boots is still in the incubator getting more steady on his feet before I put him in plus he's being company for the one mentioned above. There's one more in the incubator still with bits of shell and membrane stuck to the down. I'm contemplating giving it a bath and then putting it back in the incubator to dry again.

The shell mess will wear off a couple days usually .No need for a bath unless they have some really hard stuff stuck on them which usually only happens when they needed assisting

Sorry - I'm going to try this again!

Thank you for the float test advice - all 3 floated :( No movement in them either. I opened them all. 1 was a yolk, 1 stopped developing early, it was small but had a spine and all the parts but fluids were black. The last one was ready to hatch but dead. Not sure what went wrong with that one but it was very interesting to open and see.

But I am glad to know our hatch is done. We are in full blown chick mode now!!!!!
sorry to hear they didn't make it! At least now you know!

Here is my little Jerusalem cruiser I made for my Silkie chicks foot. I used a semi stiff, semi flexible craft styrofoam and duct tape. (Cheap stuff, so it isn't too sticky.) The chick in question is already a few weeks old, so it needs the added support to encourage its foot to straighten. All a young chick needs is some tape, and it is an easy fix. Few days and it should sort out. They do tend to give up on walking if it is too cumbersome or put on before they really know how to walk.
