This is only my 2nd hatch, and the 1st one I did last summer. I am having a much more difficult time keeping my temp right this time! Grrr! I live in a very old drafty house and no room has a remotely constant temp. The living room is closest, so that's where my bator is, but when the heat stove kicks on, its raising my temp. I have 7 bantam eggs in there that I paid $50 to get!! Its making me so nervous!!!! Stupid weather make up ur mind!!!!!! Lol Ok, rant over.

Lol...I can't keep my hands off them so far. I did manage to put in my turner and stack the excess eggs on top of the eggs that fit in. So far I have candled the eggs that are on top and have to be turned by hand and even though it is only a few days since they were put in I have almost 50% showing some kind of growth. :) I just counted... 51 eggs in! I have 11 stacked on top of the others. So I've candled those 11 and the twelve or so directly under them and I can see growth in 10 eggs already.

(2/23...just candled all the eggs this afternoon and I have 18 that might be clears...but still can't tell with them since the shells are dark...I'll wait a few more days, candle again, and see what I have. It should be more obvious by day 10)

These are dark shelled eggs, though not as dark as Marans. That means it's not super easy to see what's going on inside. My main concern is that the eggs on top will be naturally warmer than the eggs in the turner. I have the thermometer set just below the tops of the eggs in the turner so I know the eggs above are a little on the warm side yet I see more growth in them than I do in the lower set of eggs...so far. I wonder...does a slightly higher temp (say 101 degrees) cause a slightly faster development? Anyway, in a few more days I'll candle the whole lot and see where I'm at, toss the clears and set a few more into the turner...assuming there will be a couple of clears, lol.

I'm not really worried about the eggs being out of the incubator long enough to candle them because momma hens will get off the eggs once in a while to eat and drink...a few moments being candled at this stage of development shouldn't hurt. I take the lid off the incubator (it's an older LG) and snag a couple of eggs, put the lid back on, candle those eggs, then lift up the lid and do it again. I only candle them when my house is fairly warm, usually in the evening just before bedtime.

Sonderah,

Here is something that has helped me a lot with my LG incubator...

I wrap an old baby blanket under and around the outside edge of the incubator and clip it together so it stays in place with cloths pins. It keeps drafts away from the seam between the top and the bottom and I really feel like it stabilizes the temperature inside. I did it for the last hatch of last year and the first hatch this year and it worked well...I have my incubator all wrapped up again for this go around too!

Hope that helps!

Ok thanks!! I'll for sure have to try that cause I had to move my bator to a different (more drafty) room, cause the grand baby is visiting for almost a week. She just turned 2, so noway they would survive her!! Lol
