March Hatch-A-Long.( How is it gettting here so quick ? LOL )

I have started 3 Sebastopol/Pomeranian goose eggs. I haven't been able to find Max a girlfriend anywhere. I couldn't find anyone willing to sell just a few turkey eggs, so I bought a few goose eggs. I figured they are about the same size. Maybe they can be buddies.

Max still comes in to visit but he sleeps outside now.

He wanders off every day insearch of a girlfriend. He visits with my neighbors. Today I found him on my neighbors car.

But no scratches and I cleaned off the poo. He likes to hang out on the front porch and look at the lake. He is such a big boy now.

OMG he is so big and gorgeous

are they a tan color? my orps eggs are a tan pinkish color by day 6 or 7 you can vaguely see lines that I know are veins but if you weren't sure what you were seeing you might not pick up on them by day 10 you will see a nice air cell formed and bigger lines that may even show red enough to see...and something that looks like a lava lamp wave inside

Yes very light tan. I re candled them this evening. I did finally find the air cells and a black cloudy mass. Lol Looks like they may be coming along.

Handsome, he shouldn't have a hard time finding a girl friend. Oh wait, you need to find him a girl friend. :/

I candled the eggs I wasn't sure about again tonight and pulled 8 more that look to be clear. I'm down to 23 from the original 50+ but I'm happy with even this many for the time of year it is and the way the weather was. I'll check these eggs tomorrow and see what looks to be wrong with them on the inside but most look to be simply clear. A couple look to have bacterium rings (is that what it's called?). It was nice to find that some that I had marked questionable definitely have wrigglers now! Less than two weeks to go now!

Oh no!!!

I got up this morning and quite by accident checked on the incubator and it was not on! The temp was down to 80 degrees! I've never had this happen before. I was next to the incubator looking for something else and happened to think to look at the temp and I'm so glad that I did...I candled one egg really quick to see if there was any chance my wigglers were still wiggling and it was! Whew...I've got to figure out what went wrong quick...it's back on and running but I'll be gone for hours in the middle of the day today and I don't want to chance that this might happen again!

worry, worry, worry...

i got to check my eggs today first time hatching and on day 7 only 3 look to be dead but left them in the incubator to see what i see next week and if they are still dead i will pull them lets hope thats all that die :)

Max has been off visiting my neighbors when I'm not home. I didn't know until my neighbor told me a few days ago. Yesterday I found him walking down the street on his way home. He is not affraid of anyone. My neighbor said when she sits outside to have her coffee, Max tries to get in her lap. Another neighbor was working under his car and when he came out Max was there watching him. I am worried he'll get hit by a car. So I decided clip his wing.

I love that Max is so friendly but I love him too much to take any chances. This also means he won't be able to sleep on the chimney anymore. I brought him in the house tonight, so he doesn't know yet. He is going to be sooo mad at me. Sometimes being the mom sucks.

My beautiful Max looks a little crooked now.

So I candled over the weekend which was day 10 and I was down to 16 of my original 41. A lot of clears. I attribute this to the extreme cold we have been having (I'm not using much in the way of artificial light and only enough additional heat to just barely keep the water from freezing). And instead of the massive gang of roos I had last spring, this year I've got 3 out of 25 birds and a few of the birds are from my July hatch so they aren't quite the year old that most of them are (a few are 2 years old) - at least that's all the things I think are lowering the fertility rate. Last year's hatches had a much lower rate of clears.

Then on day 12 one my DD's pals was over and unplugged my bator (which is in the kitchen) to charge his phone. I found it unplugged when I checked on them upon coming home from work. Air temp had already dropped to about 65. I totally freaked and immediately plugged it back in. Candled again on the evening of day 13 and there are 5 that I was pretty confident are still progressing well (I could see them moving about in their shells and the veins hadn't receeded). There are 6 others I'm a little unsure of. Pulled the rest and put them in a ziploc to crack them for scientific purposes. 3 had chicks in some stage of development, but they were clearly goners and 2 had stopped developing a while ago and had almost no growth.

I'm really hoping at least a few of the remaining eggs hatch. They are the only ones I will be able to hatch that were possibly fathered by our Red Pyle Old English roo whom I sold right before setting.

I'm collecting to reset right away once this hatch is through. Those will hatch just in time to clean the 'bator and reset for the Easter Hatch-a-long.

Hi guys, Newbie here, we made a homemade bator from a foam cooler, hopes it works. Set 3 showgirls 3 silkies, 4 Turkens on the February 20. Not sure what to look for when candleing, kind of confusing ! I have looked at pics but am still not sure. Temp went up to 103 last night for a few hrs, now I'm very concerned. Hoping at least some can still hatch through my mistakes.
