March Hatch-A-Long.( How is it gettting here so quick ? LOL )

Hi guys, Newbie here, we made a homemade bator from a foam cooler, hopes it works. Set 3 showgirls 3 silkies, 4 Turkens on the February 20. Not sure what to look for when candleing, kind of confusing ! I have looked at pics but am still not sure. Temp went up to 103 last night for a few hrs, now I'm very concerned. Hoping at least some can still hatch through my mistakes.

Good luck on your eggs! Does your cooler have a fan? With a temp spike that high, it's better if it is a still air. You never know..wait until day 5, then you should be able to start seeing some veining. Usually waiting until day 7 is best, but where you are concerned after the temp spike, you can check and see..won't hurt anything. Make sure you slowly turn the egg..not too fast. A real bright flashlight works if you don't have a candler. Make a round spot/place with your hands, cradle the egg over the light that you are holding in your hand, facing up through your thumb and your pointy finger. I'll see if I can find a photo.

You want the fat end down. This photo looks to be quite a ways along. That black blob..is a baby. Looks to be around 10 days along. If your eggs are fertile/viable, you will also see a nice white air sac developing. Good luck!

Max has been off visiting my neighbors when I'm not home. I didn't know until my neighbor told me a few days ago. Yesterday I found him walking down the street on his way home. He is not affraid of anyone. My neighbor said when she sits outside to have her coffee, Max tries to get in her lap. Another neighbor was working under his car and when he came out Max was there watching him. I am worried he'll get hit by a car. So I decided clip his wing.

I love that Max is so friendly but I love him too much to take any chances. This also means he won't be able to sleep on the chimney anymore. I brought him in the house tonight, so he doesn't know yet. He is going to be sooo mad at me. Sometimes being the mom sucks.


My beautiful Max looks a little crooked now.

I'm so glad you did!! makes me feel better...hope he sleeps in more

Was this yours? I found it on google. I have a few of my own photos here and there, different chicks and hens. Google a certain word or two, and up comes some photos of them, with one or two of mine in it. I was surprised at first when I saw them. I have Nankin babies and silkies and sex links..and.. I do post a lot of photos on here. I think they like to pull the chicken related photos from BYC pretty often.

Day 19, just candled last night before lockdown. 39 viable out of 41 set (one early quiter and one ring of blood). I guess I got a couple of spunky roo's lol.. Cant wait for that first pip, been checking every couple of hours (from the windows of coarse).. Got the brooder cleaned out and the feeder/waterers locked and loaded..

Maybe all 39 will make it.. My last hatch produced 2 chooks at day 19, I set 6 of the same kind of eggs so we'll see if I get any early birds..

Well I just hatched 10 eggs the natural way in February and they are doing great in the living room. My hen is still settling on 7 duds and we are leaving her there until Sunday and removing them. Been saving my little Banty eggs going to replace then duds with these and one huge egg that one of my black hen laid. It has to be a double yolk, it is so big it won't fit in an egg carton. I told my best friend that I was putting them under the hen on her birthday and they with hatch out just before my birthday. Will be a great April Fool birthday present for me, bet they will be all roos,
