hehe I love this holiday

Move on over to the April thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/862536/april-hatch-a-long-anyone/170

oh wow, no, I have only seen that in eggtopsy never a live chick. it sounds like the yolk sack ruptured if you were able to "pour" it out?

awww! good idea with the sizzle friend.. some people also use a mirror in the brooder with lone chicks.
on the peeping all night - do you have a small stuffed animal you could give her? she wants to get "under" something, like another chick, or her mama. they like the feeling of the stuffed animal pressing down on them, they'll get all snuggly and quiet under there

Yes, I poured out the yellow liquid. It was really sticky and kind of gross to me. It was after I poured out the liquid that I could see the chicks intestines in the bottom of the shell. Very yucky...

Update on my March hatch...really not what I was expecting. Set 29, had 6 clears, 5 hatched, 1 pipped and zipped then got shrink wrapped so I helped it out. 1 breech did not absorb yolk, 1 other did not absorb yolk, 1 pipped and shrink wrapped helped a little on this and it hatched out on its own but could not walk. So, in the end 6 healthy, beautiful babies, 3 culled, 14 nothing and I did not do eggtopsy.

Learned that my thermometer was off and I was at a higher temperature...104 degrees F. Bought a Little Giant 10200 this weekend, warming it now to set more eggs as soon as I get them collected.

My March hatch was good since I had new thermo and hygro to help keep things steady. Out of 71 eggs set, I tossed several clears, had some early quitters and a couple blood rings. Put 51 into lockdown. Came out with 14 d'Uccles (one with a bum foot who was the very last hatcher), 5 Ameraucana/Araucana crosses, 1 cross of my most favorite year old mixed breed hen with my d'Uccle roo (who am determined to keep for myself being the CUTEST THING EVER) and 23 EEs (4 of which are frizzle of the ones that are still here). They are ridiculously cute. I have already sold 2 d'Uccles, 3 A/As, and 5 EEs. I have an order for the remaining 11 good d'Uccles being picked up Weds (the bum foot one might stay here until it can be sexed and then passed on as a pet to someone who has the resources for it) and someone from a few blocks down the road coming tomorrow to pick out a handful. The good news is, having basically sold all the d'Uccles already, DH said it was cool if I loaded the 'bator with a new hatch. Only filled the turner with 41 this time - turning by hand is for the birds and I'm done with it. Thinking it might be time to get a second 'bator as a dedicated hatcher so I can set new eggs on a rotation and have day old chicks each week so I could sell more.

sorry that this hatch didn't go as expected. learning something or finding something to take away from each hatch will only make you better in the long run.

that is so awesome that you are able to sell chicks so quickly and set more. that would just feed my addiction to hatching, probably too much!

Thanks, I do enjoy learning, I am just sorry that a chick had to learn the lesson as well. You will indeed see me in the April hatch a long. Setting 41 tomorrow to hatch on my wife's birthday. I am praying for a better hatch. Moving over to the April hatch.
