2 more are almost out....there is 2 of 3 that have pipped. I can't get a good look at the others since the first think they are in a soccer game. I will be happy with 7 or so...getting any to hatch is a blessing for the first time.

So far the only one I know for sure that my bcm is the daddy of is the black one, the others are yellow so I guess my basque has been getting busy. I'm just thrilled!!!!

I candled my eggs today (Day 7) and saw development and movement in all of them. I was kind of hoping for a dud or two so I could put my automatic turner back in! All well... I'll continue the hand turning. It's actually not too bad... I rigged my incubator so it's sitting on a "lazy susan" turntable. I have the turntable sitting sideways at at 45 degree angle. The incubator is sitting on it with rubber grip liner so it doesn't slip and I just spin the turntable multiple times a day... usually about every 2 hours.

You both are talkin about the newly born chicks knocking the other eggs around....
I don't know if u have been told but a lot of folk were putting that rubbery non slip drawer liner under the eggs over that wire .... So I ran to the dollar store and picked up a roll for a buck and it was REALLY nice it made it easier to turn the eggs and they didn't kick the eggs around and it made clean up super easy!!

Woke up to seven chickies running around the bator. No progress on the one that pipped through a blood vessel. When I get the chicks out I'll take it out and see if it survived.

Total so far 11/40 hatched!

Hi friends! I need some suggestions:

I'm going on vacation tomorrow and won't be back till late in the week, my plan of selling these chicks before we go hasn't panned out like I wanted it to. So now I have a dilemma....

I have a broody hen that has been broody for who knows how long...but she is so badly wanting chicks, she sits on the nests religiously! So I could make her a seperate pen for her and the babies for outside, but it is supposed to rain for the next two days. I know I can make it water proof, I have a huge dog house attached to a dog kennel cage. So I know it could work? But I'm worried about the rain....

Or I can set her up in the brooder box that I have in my bathtub, but if I do that I would have stinky chickens in the house

. I can put a top on the brooder to keep her in...but who is going to clean it, put more feed and water in there? If I do that does the chicks and her need a heat lamp?

My sister is going to take care of the critters while we are gone, but I know she won't clean the brooder, or put her in hand in there to put fresh water/feed in for them. She WILL not go into the coop to gather the eggs either, so I was kinda counting on Alice to do the egg watch for me...my sister has only agreed on putting fresh water/food in the food/water bowls which she can do without going inside the coop.

I am leaning more toward building them the seperate coop but I'm really worried about the weather for the next couple of days...and if they are in the house, I know she won't do anything for them...she is a VERY limited animal person. The chickens scare the piss out of her.....

I was planning on selling these chicks but if I only get 7 or so out of the bunch I really don't see the point. WHAT DO I DO?????????
