March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

I'm debating if I should go ahead and take the one chick out... Everytime he sees me, he pecks and the incubator and cries up a storm at me. I think he may have imprinted on my last night. I've never had a chick this small as eager as this one to see me. So far, nothing on the other egg with a pip, however Stormy did move it around (along with all the other eggs).

Those ducks are so stinking cute!

I so want some nn turkens! Wanna share? I'm not picky.

I want to add showgirls to my babies so if anyone would love to share I would be so excited!
I only got two NN, and I will share eventually.

My longterm project is multi-colored Silkie Showgirls, so I'm hoping these are hens. It'll take at least 7 months before I know if it's possible.

Well I have 7 BCM babies out of the 3dozen I started with. They were from ebay and I think I had a humidity problem at some point. only 2 made it out on there own because the rest were bound by the membrain. I helped the rest and one more is trying to zip. Thy start to zip but can only get about an inch then they don't get any farther. I just helped one that had the zip started at 6am this morning. This only my second hatch and the first time I've had to help the chicks.

All that said lol, the one I just help has some slime that doesn't look like yolk to me on his bum and some green stuff that looks like the poops they have when they are still in the bator. I woundr if I should try to clean it off, I'm just not experianced and am afraid to go poking around in that area much. Also the chics I just put in the brooder have some sticky stuff still on there backs and one has some on his head. How would I get it off of them or do I need to?

HI,
I would wait also, Stormy will be OK.really......to much chance of losing the pipped one. JMHO
Also, did you know Serama chicks need thier food ground to start with...The crumbles aare to big for them to swallow.
( I apologize if you already know about Serama chick care)

Sounds like you are going to have a friend for sure..............
Good grief, I cannot wait for my next ones................
I see we are both from Oregon..................

After they have settled in the brooder a little bit.and I have time...........I hold them ,gently, under the faucet.warm water.about body temp,
then use my hair dryer ..not hot , hold it away from them......and let them fluff up. Amazingly they seem to like it and totally relax.
Some folks just use a warm wash cloth......
Sorry your hatch was not larger, but sounds like you did a great job

Yeah Gbear
That green stuff will all come off its just hatch goo.
If chick was a little sticky you can wait .some do need to be cleaned and some when they are put in with the others fluff up its weird i guess they jump on each other and squish against each other and it fluffs them. The one i just assisted tonite has shell on his back like a turtle but im letting him go for a while Tomorrow i can get it off. WEt arag or underthe facet
And Man hes loud.!
Loudest chick i ever hadif peeping makes others come out i should have all mine hatch
Well i got 4 LOs tonite and one is zipped but sitting there.the Silkie Ams and splits are not doing a thing...hopefully a day late
I want them so much too!

Howdy all!!!! Just got back from vcacation..went really well. Soooooo glad go be home, but lots of chicken chores to do tomorrow as long as we dnt get snowed in. I got 13 perfect chickies before I left. I will post pics tomorrow. They are doing so good!! My sister said they did perfectly while we were gone, I was a little nervous about leaving them. Came home to happy chirping babies. I'm exhausted so off to bed.

Having such a crappy night. My previous avatar was a pic of my baby "Sophia"...a bantam white cochin pullet I purchased as a day old last March. She passed away tonight. She was hanging by herself and ignored the handful of scratch I threw out when I opened the pop door for the day so I picked her up and checked her out. She seemed a little lethargic compared to her normal self and her butt had a poopy mess so I brought her in for a bath, blow dry, vitamin booster and some TLC under a heat lamp. I kept her in all night and this morning she seemed about the same so I gave her more vitamins and she ate some food, a small strawberry and drank some water. I got her out again this evening for some cuddling and her butt was messy again and she could barely keep her eyes open but otherwise seemed fine. No other outward signs of illness. She died an hour later. I suspect she might have either been egg bound (abdomen was a little harder than normal but not a lot) or ate something bad while free ranging. She was one of my favorite girls and so sweet. I will miss her terribly and my kiddos are broken hearted too. Hoping lots of fluffy butts hatch tomorrow so they have a small distraction. I feel so bad for her best friend "Stormy" a SB OEGB pullet and her boyfriend "BB" a Dutch bantam cockerel. They were looking for her all day today. They were hatch mates and I am going to be keeping a close eye on them as the three of them are ALWAYS together. If Sophia ate something bad, it is possible she shared with the two of them.

My pipped egg is still cheeping away in there. Not much progress yet. I did pick up a humidity gauge today while I was in town (suspected it might be low even with a sponge seeing as my Brinsea right next to it has the humidity pump adding water several times an hour) and went ahead and put it in. Didn't feel it was more of a risk to the pipper than possibly way too low humidity. I added an extra warm wet sponge when I added the gauge and wrapped a towel around the bator too. It is hanging in there at 59-62*F so I think it's good. Since it was open, I risked a quick candle of an egg that I suspected an internal pip when I went into lockdown but hadn't progressed or wiggled since...it was dead. When I opened up the egg it was a cutie pie little splash silkie with really good foot feathering but it had a weird spot on it's back that was kinda like a see through section and it hadn't absorbed the yolk sac. It just wasn't meant to be. I am hearing several different cheeps coming from the other eggs so I am hoping for a few external pips when I wake up in the morning. It's our last school day before Spring Break and this mommy can't wait to sleep in...and cuddle some BABIES! :)
