FIRST EGG! YEA!!
Got my 3rd gold laced brahma egg today want so bad to set some but i guess this early the chicks might be screwed up Anybody set the first eggs?
How were they ?
Heck i dont even know if the roo fertilizes them!

Roxanne I set my pullets first eggs and they all hatched, even though they were on the small side. Amazing how much bigger the eggs get as the months go on.

read on another site...please don't ask, I have short term memory blindness and couldn't tell you other than something garden, anyway, someone said that they have never herd of better than 90% hatch rate for shipped eggs. And somewhere else on ebay, someone if stating that 25% is common, 50% good, and 75% rare...

anyway, it appears that hatching shipped eggs has problems. Can't all be the post office though.

but it's still fun.

No it's not all the PO's fault. The eggs are exposed to all sorts of things during travel. Here's a good article on why shipped eggs are more risky : Shipped Eggs

Just got done candling. Looks like 2 blood rings, and 2 clears. The rest were all developing. So 12/17... So sad I dropped #17, it was developing... These are shipped eggs so I guess it could be worse. If the lethal leg gene doesn't come into effect with these guys, 12 Serama is perfect! As long as I don't drop anymore.

The most I have hatch from shipped Serama eggs was 4/12 in one set. The rest were single chicks (3) but those were only 6-7 eggs set.

Ok still no pips. I am getting worried. I just really need some good vibes right now before I cry.

Please please let my babies hatch. I promise to spoil them all.
PRAYING FOR CHICKIES!!!!

(and my eggs look like road maps too, lol)
Yes, a blood ring indicates a dead embryo. However are you positive it's a blood ring? Are there no other veins? Sometimes a vein will grow and look like a blood ring. You can wait if you'd like, but if there are no other veins and just a blood ring I'd toss it before it goes bad.
I have had that "circle vein thing" happen MANY times!!! I wont toss unless I know 100% sure its a gonner!
Really? I come in this morning and it says there are 51 new posts! LOL. I went back PAGES and found my last post and it was only 13 hours ago. You peeps are busy!

Woohoo! First eggs are exciting! So are the 2nd, 3rd... then the first of any other hens. I remember our first egg, and then the first green egg from our EE, and then the first silkie egg... Always so much fun!! The coop is like Christmas! I love collecting eggs. :)

Oh no.

I pulled a few eggs and candled this morning, 4 silkies and 1 BR look like they didnt make the last stage and died in the shell. I pulled them. I know I have a few more internally peeping and pipping. I think I may pull the dry ones from yesterday in a bit and put them in the bathtub to get some room. I am up to 13 I think!

Aren't you trapped at home today? So why do you have to wait until tonight? Candle them already. Ooo... and maybe throw in a picture for this nosey busy body. :)

I would but I should wait until my kids get home. If they don't get to take part they'll be... very... upset with me. Plus it's easier when it's dark. Our house has so many windows, I have to close myself in the closet to see anything at all and it's REALLY tight in there, lol. I guess I should clean it, eh?

The one with the blood sac is probably a hernia. Depending on the size of the hernia will give you an idea if the chick is going to make it or not. Can you post a picture? SOunds like your chick has curled toes. It's an easy fix with a chick shoe. Here is a good thread on helping them straghten out: Chick shoes I personally use the little round band aids. One on the bottom and one one the top and the chicks feet come out looking pretty normal after a few days.
