March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

So I sent our teenage son out to the coop yesterday afternoon to collect the blue egg that I knew should have been out there. I told him to go get the eggs, but give me the blue one because I'm going to set it in the incubator the next day (today!) and I wanted to store it. Oh my word, he dropped it!! Of all the eggs he collected, he dropped that one! I saw him drop something, then pick it up and chuck it into the field!

I opened up the back door & shouted at him... "Did you just drop my blue egg?!" He shouted back... "Um, Maybe!". UGH. So, I'm sitting here hoping that our other EE hen lays this morning. It's the last egg I wanted for this hatch set. The incubator holds 7 eggs. I wanted 3 barred rock, and 4 EE's. I had the timing planned out well... but it's my fault as I forgot to factor in "teenager" to my calculations. LOL. All well. If I don't get another EE... I have lots of other eggs I can put in there.

I have my incubator all cleaned and running to stabilize the temp & humidity. I will be setting soon!!!

Well sad and happy news. Good news is Rose hatched at 4am and my subconscious mind woke me up just in time to watch her zip! Bad news is I'm pretty sure I've lost ALL of the cochins, and Si died last night after being pipped for 12+ hours. I looked at all of them, and Si I think had a defect. When I took him out he had a large air bubble on his neck, almost like he had an airleak inside his body somewhere. The cochins all ceased movement 24 hours ago. I did an eggtopsy on one and its head was facing downward and it had no room to move. When I did the other one I saw its aircell moving very slightly and saw a bit of bleeding so I wrapped it up and put it back. When I checked on it later it had passed and its shell was full of goop. Both of those chicks did not lose the required amount of weight before lockdown, so I expected problems. The last one looks still inside its shell, but I'll leave it just because.

Malcolm has pipped internally, and I pipped externally for him on accident because I thought he was dead too (no movement and really large aircell), or shrink-wrapped. He has a moist paper towel wrapped around him and is responding to sound so hopefully he'll make it out on his own.

The last 5 are due tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Busy week for us! I received 8 beautiful LCO's from Jordon Farms. I had ordered them last summer for fall delivery but they were unable to provide what I wanted until now. They are worth the wait, very pretty and oh so friendly.
My broody hen kept leaving the nest, I guess I forgot to tell her she was on lockdown

. So I put the 15 eggs in the bator. Hatching started on day 22 and was completed by day 25. I have a pediatric stethoscope so I could tell I had viable chicks late to hatch. Anyway, we hatched 11 French copper Marans and one OE.

More to hatch on 3/15, 3/22, and Easter. Gonna set Cream Legbar eggs for the Easter Hatch A Long!

Good luck everyone with hatching.

Mine are set! :) Yippee!

I waiting all morning for another EE egg... but didn't get one. I did get another Barred Rock egg though, so I figured that will have to do. So instead of 3 BR & 4 EE, I set 4 BR and 3 EE. We needed to go to my son's bowling league, so I set them about 10:30. When we got back at 12:30 we found an egg from our EE hen! She was a bit too late... but I don't care, I squeezed it in the incubator. It's a little muddy since the snow is melting today, but all well. So it was set just a couple hours after the first 7.

I'll have to hand turn them for a while. That's ok.
