Hooray, my turn for a horrible hatch...

Malcolm gave up fighting and died in the shell even though it was breathing. It was malpositioned and still had quite a bit of yolk to absorb.

I have 5 more due tomorrow and I'm just going to let whatever happens happen. Not sure what went wrong, but it definitely wasn't great.

And I am thinking the same thing about looking after all those chicks but in the Easter hatch along there are many over 100 and one that set like 230 chicks whew I couldn't keep up!! Lol

Good Morning,
The first thing I did while having my first cup of coffee.....
Was have a good laugh at how many pages I needed to catch up on.
Good Grief, this is a busy, busy thread.
It is nice that everyone takes the time to keep us updated...

I was up at 4:30.checked the bator and everything was fine...100 temp.,67 huminity.
Went back to sleep...At 7:00 temp 95 humidity55.Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
This is for my three in lockdown.

I don't know what to think.guess I should know tomorrow if they were affected by the change.

Do not have time for comments right now but wishing everyone well.

Probably just be a little late.If none are pipped i dont think the 55 will hurt them that much

Well this is a weird hatch 6 eggs..
none day 20 or 21.
Day 22 one hatched

Day 23 (morning) one hatched

Day 23 (night) a third hatched!

Spaced out like crazy
2 eggs to go but one says 32 degrees on it im not expecting much from it

I set some eggs at 12;30pm CST.think i have the wrong time zone for Easter hatch a long.
Anyway I dont expect a lot because some were really cold when i collected them and some are from my LBs and my roo is in love with ONE girl ..so not many are fertile if any .BUT im in anyway
Well better go over and GET in!!

75 post behind....lockdown on Monday. Looked at them, they all look good. I Ddnt check all of them-only a hand full. I'm so excited and nervous!!!! Looks like most everyone is nearing lockdown -good luck.

Alright. I have a question for you experienced hatchers out there. I have read several different theories about how much weight eggs are supposed to lose before they hatch. It seems to go from 11%-16%. Right now, at seven days, my chicken eggs have already lost 4.4%. If I go with the 11% loss theory, they are losing too much. If I go with the 16%, then they are probably right on track. The humidity runs from about 65% when I first add water. Then it slowly drops. When it jumps down to 20% I add more water. Right now it is at 47% and I think it was three days ago that I added water. There are 48 eggs, so the sample size is pretty good.

I like to get about 5% loss by the first week, 10% by the second, and around 13% by lockdown. Eggs that lose more are better than those that lose less though so I wouldn't sweat it

It was at seven days that i had lost the 4.4%. Today is day fourteen. I've been running about 45% for the past week, and obviously it was too high, because my average loss is about 8.9%. I think I'm going to run it dry for the next four days to try and try to get the weights down.

Any advice/suggestions?

Also, I had weird outliers. One that had lost almost 20%, and one that has only lost about 3.6%. I am hoping that they were just record keeping errors.

I have been watching the cam, when I can catch it on and I am really sorry to hear about Malcolm. nature can be very cruel, what a short little life.

Part of the reason my husband and I do this hatching project with our kids these past few years is because I think it gives them a kind of reality that our current lives don't. We don't have hard winters that tend to take ill family members, we don't go hungry because a crop fails, and have few connections to the wild world. When the eggs stop growing, when the eggs don't hatch, when a small animals fails to thrive after birth it is all very sad and hard on the heart but I think it is good for the kids, good for me. Reminders about how lucky we are, how fragile life actually is. How unfair nature can be and how it just does not pick and choose based on who is nicer or cuter or has the most of what ever. Hard lessons these little eggs teach better than any lesson I could make on my own.

Thank you for sharing you came with others. I think many of us need reminders of these things, as sad as they are.
