Sooooo many post! Been a very busy two days!

So I lose kangaroo last night. Guess she wasent strong enough. I carried her around in my hoodie pocket. I felt like a kangaroo So that is where she got her name. She was so weak. .
so getting ready to leave for b da yparty and I look in gator and my two chicks have hatched! Man that lockdown was fast. No worries.

Congrats to everyones new babies.

I am so sorry for everyone that has lost their baby. Kangaroo will be there for them.

So sorry for the losses y'all have experienced. I wish each of y'all best of luck with your new babies. This is my first hatch and it's such a roller coaster of high and lows.

On a hatching note, I want to set up a LG still air incubator as a hatcher and was hoping for some specifics. I'm sure there's a thread on it somewhere but apparently my search skills are subpar. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone, I am on day 17. This my first incubation. I do have a question and i need a little clarification. After I go into lock down I fill both water reservoirs (I have the Brinsea) close the lid and don't open until all the all the chicks hatch, right? My other question is how long do I wait after the chicks hatch before I open the incubator again? Is there any emergency reason to open it? I know I leave the chicks in there until after they hatch, but how long do I give them all to hatch , a couple of days, few hours? Also I know I am not suppose help the chicks get out of their eggs, but are there any circumstances where I should open the incubator? Sorry for all the questions, but I just want to feel prepared.
Also once I take the chicks out of the incubator, do need to wipe them off? Then I give them food and water, right?

If I should have posted this somewhere else please let me know. Thanks for all the support. You guys and gals rock,,,

I am very, very behind on posts so hurray for all the successful hatches and condolences on the losses everyone. The streaming video is a neat idea. Tomorrow is lockdown for me and I'm both excited and nervous!

It was at seven days that i had lost the 4.4%. Today is day fourteen. I've been running about 45% for the past week, and obviously it was too high, because my average loss is about 8.9%. I think I'm going to run it dry for the next four days to try and try to get the weights down.

Any advice/suggestions?

Also, I had weird outliers. One that had lost almost 20%, and one that has only lost about 3.6%. I am hoping that they were just record keeping errors.

I can't offer advice as this is my first time but I can compare notes. I'm on day 17 and by day 7 they had lost an average of 6% weight. By 14 they had lost an avg 13% with the humidity steady the entire time at 37-38%. I too have oddballs, one losing 16% and another losing only 6% which isn't as drastic as yours but still quite a difference and the difference has been consistent so I'm pretty sure they aren't errors. They are two eggs from the same hen even, that sit right next to each other in the bator. Strange.

Hooray, my turn for a horrible hatch...

Malcolm gave up fighting and died in the shell even though it was breathing. It was malpositioned and still had quite a bit of yolk to absorb.

I have 5 more due tomorrow and I'm just going to let whatever happens happen. Not sure what went wrong, but it definitely wasn't great.

It happens. I had three out of 8 live, and I call that an amazing hatch compared to the last one (I had one out of seventeen hatch!)

I am really sorry for the loses..especialy after you have named them.
I hate losing a chick I have worked with.

Sgtfirstwife : there is a thread for raising chicks and maybe you would like to read through there just to feel more prepared.
Or the incubation thread and just read questions posted previously......Some will match yours.
Your questions left me with questions....

Do you have a brooder set up yet.............
Do you have a hydrometer?

I will try to address a few questions.then keep asking here as things come up.
A wealth of information and support with all of the folks here.
Chicks usually hatch day 21..can be longer and spread out.
I give the eggs 25 days, some others may do it different..........
Chicks can live 2 to 3 days in the incubator after hatching.
No need to wipe...should be dry and fluffed up before they are removed.
Some of your concerns you may have to ask as they come up. It is hard to say if there is a reason to open the bator before all hatch.
Depends on how your hatch is going.

Day 20 and I swear time slows down when the bator is on lock down. I keep jumping up to look in the little clear window to see the eggs. I hear nothing, see nothing. Blah. It is hard to see them with incubator, wish we had a clear top one!
