Ok I have a stupid question... how do the days get counted? Does the day that the eggs go into the incubator count as day # 0 or 1???

For example, I put my eggs in last Saturday at 8pm, did Saturday evening and Sunday morning/day count as day 0 or 1?

I had the same problem with counting days until an old timer explained it to me. This is what they said:

Whatever day of the week you set your eggs on is the same day you can expect them to start hatching. (Sometimes earlier. Sometimes later.) You set eggs at 8:00pm on Saturday, March 9th so your hatch day (Day 21) is Saturday, March 30th. Another way to look at it is in hours. Saturday, 3/9 at 8pm is 0 hours. 3/10 at 8am is 12 hours and 8pm on 3/10 is 24 hours. 24 hours = 1 day or Day 1 of incubation. When you read or hear "lock down or stop turning" on Day 18 it means after the full 24 hours of Day 18 has gone by you stop turning. So that would mean that Day 18 ends on Wednesday evening 3/27 @ 7:59pm. Day 19 starts @ 8:00pm Wednesday and lockdown begins. Day 20 starts @ 8pm on Thursday and Day 21 starts @ 8pm on Friday and ends on Saturday @ 7:59pm. So on Saturday at 7:59pm you have had 21 days (each consisting of 24 hours) of full development.

Update:

It has been over 24 hours now since the chick pipped at the wrong end. Another egg that pipped at that same time but at the right end hatched itself finally a bit ago. The bator is a mess and so much chaos and I can't even count chicks at this point.

I think I am going to pull the fluffed chicks and put them in the brooder when I go in to get egg E (Wrong end pip) to see if he is alive and try to help him if he is. I know I waited longer than some would but I wanted to give him a chance and really wanted to not open the bator you know?

I think we are about half hatched at this point out of the 22 eggs!

Ok tried to help egg E out as it pipped at the wrong end over 24 hours ago. Sadly I hit a vein and it bleed just a bit. As the membrane is not dried out I cupped the egg in a damp paper towel and put him back in the bator to wait and see. Poor guy. My 13 year old daughter and I feel terrible about the blood. Today is the start of day 22.

So far we have 11 chicks and 11 pips = 22 Yay! Lets hope those last 11 do well! Some of the pip holes are looking tan/brown now.

Nope. Grams. If it were weighed in kilograms then they should lose .001788kg a day. They should be 2.061kg but are actually 2.094. Or, am I totally not understanding what you're asking?

This is for 42 eggs, btw.

AH! Yeah, the 42 eggs makes a difference. I thought you were talking about individual eggs losing more than their weight every day.

Clearly, there are too many calculations in my at-capacity brain.

Made this to get my extended family psyched. They didn't get it. Maybe you guys can appreciate it a little more. Imagine a dark movie trailer with the low, ominous voice for "THE LOCKDOWN".

Started with 22 Eggs At Lockdown

Now day 22.

14 Hatched!

8 pipped (One of them pipped wrong end over 24 hours ago and while I tried helping it a bit, not looking too good, still in egg, waiting.)

So happy to see the new hatchlings the last few hours!

That's 17 Hatched Chicks! So Happy!

Wrong Side Pip Egg is going on 30 hours now. Still in his egg. I have helped a little more. Scared to help at all with the membrane though after trying a few hours ago and getting blood. It is like the outer and inner membranes are fused together so wetting the outer milky looking one isn't helpful for finding the veins.

One other concern, one of the chicks hatched and there is blood on the towel, a lot, I am not sure what chick it was though. They are all alive at the moment.... I think I might have it picked out as one of three. Not sure there is anything I could do for it at this point though. Can you tell how nervous I am about intervention? So often intervention can make things worse in life so I am trying to be patient.

5 eggs left, all pipped. More waiting! :)
