March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

Hey everyone- I've been so busy the past several days that I have only gotten online once to check mail. We had several trees on some wooded property behind us fall on out fence for the horses that had to be fixed. We're finished yet, but got a lot done. It's always something...

I candled eggs last night, but I think it's still too early on most of them to tell yet. The polish & sultan eggs look good tho!

I will try to catch up on posts I've missed, I hope everyone's been having good hatching & incubation!

22 Eggs

And 22 Hatched and are Alive!

I am so excited and a bit shocked!

YAHOO!!!

Even your "E"?? That's awesome! So glad it turned out so well for you.

Hi... I have some questions before I do my big candle tonight. My first question is, how can I tell if one is a quitter? Does anyone have any pictures of this? Also, how long can eggs sit out of the incubator without harming them? I want to candle all of them, but it's hard for me to tell them apart unless I set them outside of the incubator until I'm all done with the others, and then put them back in...

Thanks bunches!

Quitters all look different... depends on what day they quit, or what made them quit. All clear is a quitter... but I usually give it until day 7-10 for that. "Blood rings" are usually thick around the egg... and usually clear in the rest of the area (like all the veining died and pooled together around the egg). Be careful not to confuse it with a blood vein... which is a large blood vesel that will circle the egg... and this is good. Also, failure to progress... no growth after days. No movement after many times checking it. Usually any that I think are "questionable"... I will write down notes of what I saw, check it again in 3 days... if nothing changed, then it's gone. Better to give it a few more days if you aren't sure though... I've had some that I thought were likely quitters... but then continued to progress & hatch a baby chick!

One thing you can do to tell them apart is to take a pencil and number the eggs.

You're fine leaving them out for 10-15 minutes. I cool mine everyday for that amount of time anyway. Hens are off the nest everyday for about that amount of time to eat/drink/poop.

Ok so I have a serious queston. Tomorrow at 1:30 pm is lockdown. I have eggs that are due to hatch a week later than the ones due this saturday. I am doing the "Dry Incubation" method and the increased humidity for lock down isn't to high. Do you think if I let the humidity dry out and stay around 25% for a few days so the eggs can loose their added weight by time to lock them down again? I was thinkin on adding a wedge under a small desk basket to turn them 3x a day still; my bator holds temp and humidity well so I dunno lol.

So, just to be clear, are you planning on locking down the first batch in the same incubator that the second batch is still incubating?
