March Hatch-Along Thread- Come Hatch With Us!!!!!

Hey y'all. I'm noticing that on some of the chicks that there is some hard crusty poop dried to their butts, should i be worried? Also one of the littlest ones isn't doing so good. I dnt have any electrolights but I did give it some warm wet chick food. She did eat really good, i dnt think she was eating or drinking, what do u give chicks to give them a boost?

Thanks

That is called pasty butt and is part of them transitioning from yolk to food. You need to clean it off with warm water and gently working it out. If it blocks their vent it can kill them.

According to my instruction manual, 70-80% humidity for hatch is the target range.

I have had a similar case of a wrong end low pip, I used a chop stick through an air hole to gently roll it over so the pip was on the side. I figured if the other chicks are in the bowling everything over rolling an egg is not going to hurt.

However, opening the 'bator and letting that humidity out will. The membrane can dry out and seal the chick in the shell. Depending on how long it has been pipped for I would just keep an eye on it.

I can't remember the recommended time before assisting a hatch, but I waited until it was 24 hours.

If you must open it up, I have read that running hot water and steaming up the bathroom minimises humidity loss if you do open it up to help. Guess it depends on how big your 'bator is to move around.

Hope that helps in some way.

EDIT: Hokankai beat me to it!
YOu can also use a spray bottle of warm water spray it a few times before you take the chick out or/and right after
It shoots that humidity up nicely for me Gotta say i like the chopstick idea..

Glad the chicks are doing well!

So precious! I love their proud guardian too!

Mine are on day 20... no pips and I have checked at least 5 times already today! The suspense is killing me!!! Its my first hatch so I'm sure I'm extra anxious. Come on, DO SOMETHING ALREADY!!!!

I don't think that'll be necessary at this point. That's more for if you're worried about shrink wrapping, but you're removing the part that would shrink wrap.

Thought I'd let everyone know...yesterday was a horrible and tragic day for me. We had a coon break into my lavender call duck pen. I went out yesterday morning to find FIVE dead ducks and a dead Polish rooster that was in the pen with them. The survivors are in the house getting some much needed love and care. Out of the five that survived, only one was unharmed...the other four have puncture wounds, bruises, and other injuries to boot. Needless to say, I was devastated. I had been working on this color project for almost three years! I feel extra bad too because I had promised PugBug some eggs from them. I'm simply heartbroken over the whole thing. :hit
I am so sorry
