March hatch along

Sorry to hear that @sutherland

praying for your hatch, @carcar80.

mine went well for my first hatch.
I received 20 eggs, 6 of which were not fertile. I had two early quitters ( look rings) and one egg that was cracked by the aquarium thermometer falling off the glass lid onto the egg. None of those three made it. Lesson: always seal a cracked egg if it is viable.

11 eggs made it to the so-called "lockdown". Three of these eggs died before the due date. I believe this is due to my error. I suspected they were a bit ahead of schedule, and when I saw evidence of the air cell increasing by a large amount in one day, I should ha e added water immediately to raise humidity and not waited 8-11 hours (my days are blurred, very little sleep, my actions are not entirely clear to me). I feel entirely responsible for their inability to hatch, and I promise, I'll try to do better next time. All 8 of mine are bouncing around in the incubator still. Haven't moved them into the broader yet, the last straggler is still mostly wet, I did put some shallow trays of fermented chick starter in there. I'm afraid to give them water in there, but they seem to be doing okay for now. At least til the little guy dries off a little bit.

So, what's the opinion here? Do I decrease my temperature by say .50 degrees next time?

I'm definitely going to be candling like I did this past time, once I get to day 15 or so.
Do you think I kept them too dry throughout incubation or do you think it was the following scenario?
I don't want to miss them saying they are ready to pip and need the extra moisture.(is that what happened, or was humidity too low throughout incubation?)
ugh, its impossible for me use this keyboard on this phone today. Please pardon me while I try to figure out what's wrong with the technology in my life.

Adorable babies!! I like your brooder set up too :thumbsup

Y'all know wha? I just realized I had started posting in the April thread.. But my next eggs are due THIS Friday, not next. LOL. Duh.

Anyway, got the dozen Marans eggs back from their temporary home last night. This made it easy! One day of turning (today) and then I get to lock down! :lau

So. Fingers crossed that this time will go better. Some of you may recall that my last hatch was a total waste- ended up with ALL shrink wrapped, one hatched unassisted but died in the bator (I think by that point my humidity was TOO high and it drowned) and one assisted hatch that ended up dying Sunday at 5 days old.

carcar I hope it works out!!!!!

Thanks! I'll tell you one thing, there'll be NO candling. Which the eggs being so dark helps, but hopefully even with light ones in the future I'll be better able to control myself.

That has been surprising to me on this thread the amount of candling so many are doing. I am not a hatching guru at all, I am good at dealing w/ shrink wrap, but that was forced on me. Anyway I haven't really participated in many hatch a long threads and had no idea so much candling was going on. I only candle once at half time.

If they hatched on time I would say the temp is good, but the humidity is off, but that is just an assumption on my part and I am not a hatching expert by any stretch.

that was my plan however, I'm glad I did candle as often as I did so I know exactly where my problems were. This was my first hatch with and now I know where the changes need to be made. And I have 8 little bundles of fluff now, all praise is for God :)
