I heard that the float test is for after the hatch is done, to see if any are still alive. ???
If you have only 2 days left til hatch, I think they should be on lockdown with higher humidity. I have never heard of floating the eggs right before hatch. With the porousness of the eggs, I think the water would get inside and drown them. Heck, I don't know ... just my thought.

Good luck on your hatch! AND, welcome to BYC !!!

Hi
welcome-byc.gif
If Hatch day [day 21] is in 2 days, put the eggs in lockdown. No more turning needed, lay the eggs on their side or put them in an egg carton, BIG END UP w/ the bottoms of the cups and tops of the peaks cut out [for air circulation] take out the plugs to allow more oxygen to circulate. Up the temp to 100, up the humidity to 60 - 70 %. STEP AWAY FROM THE BATOR! Do NOT open it again until your chicks have hatched [newborns can live on their yolks for 36 to 72 hours]. Sit back,

Here are my egg stats. My rooster is a great big failure and I don't think I have any good eggs from his girls.

Apparently he's just "not in the mood" when it is cold and two feet of snow on the ground. 30 duds for my brown eggs. However, on a happier note I do have about 13 out of 18 silkie eggs that appear to be doing wonderfully. 2 of the cuckoos are developing which I'm totally stoked about. 1 of the black/splash eggs looks like it was a double yolker. You can see two eyes in two different spots when candling and...one big blood ring.

I thought it might be a double because of the egg size and shape but couldn't really tell by candling at first. Two of the shipped silkies look like they have a disconnected air sac, and the rest weren't fertile. Today is day 10 so I'm about half way there!

Hooray for the silkies. I am sorry for the others. I kinda just went through the same thing. Only had one hatch out of twelve but he is a little cutie.

I had a temperature spike up to 105.6 the first night I set my 21 mutt eggs, so I was worried I may have killed them all. Then we added a CPU fan to the 'bator and I had temps and humidity all over the place for the first 24-36 hours. However, I candled last night, and all 21 are showing signs of growing and doing well

Count me in too. First timer..11 BCM from ebay went into the incubator on Feb 17..so I have figured hatch date of March 10...hard time candling and just started raising the humidity..this is fun..but stressful..no sleep for me!

I just candled my 23 eggs that are on day 12. I've been candling everyday almost and I had 6 clear that I finally threw out after I cracked them. Wanted to see so I know next time. They were clear. And one that looked like it quit about 4 or 5 days ago. Nothing moving and it had a blob flowting around that was seperate from the embryo. I didn't open that one. All the rest are kicking around like crazy so I have 15 developing nicely. YAY! My first time! I also had one that looked like there were two chicks moving around. And I was wondering how often that can happen with silkies, or if it does. Anyone else had a double yoker with silkies?

Also thanks to all the wonderful people on this site and the unbelievable wealth of information and experience I knew what to do during a power outage yesterday. I put a water bottle with hot water in it in the incubator and it brought the temp right back up. And I covered it with a blanket. Thankyou!
