Marek's and what to do?

Chicks must be vaccinated at 1 day old. It is too late now. You can see your old posts and threads by clicking on the profile tab in the blue bar at the top of the page.

i do not know if vaccination will help now - - i've never heard of anyone doing that. i would imagine it would not help her assuming she has mareks.

you cannot disinfect mareks. once it's there, it's there. all chickens brought on your property will be exposed, with my understanding, forever. you cannot get rid of it. even fire doesn't kill it.

other suggestions: call a vet. have her leg looked at.

For one, I am not a "dude". Two, you are wrong. I have contacted the state vet. I have had necropsies done. My specialty is not poultry so I have had to do a lot of research, and I am not talking about "wiki" crap either. See, you are uninformed and insulting us. Depending on your climate, if you depopulate the virus only lives a certain time. Longer in warm climates and less in cold(still about 3 yrs). There is no need to depopulate though. If you get it you need to vaccinate. You can still sell hatching eggs. I know of a few big name breeders that have told me they have dealt with it. They vaccinate and breed for resistance. None have had a recurrence after changing some things up. I don't sell chicks or birds so other than my initial expense and sadness of having so many get sick and die I am optimistic for next year.

We are trying to help with REAL info. If you noticed sems response waaay back she stated the BOOK she got her info from.
If you never dealt with mareks you have no idea what she is even talking about. The first symptom in most of my affected birds was a limp, then one leg paralyzed(def. Inoperative), then unable to walk. Some deteriorated quickly and some did the leg "split".

You seem like you are tolling and not helping. You are going to cause the thread to be closed when the OP still needs help.

To the OP-I would just keep an eye on her and make sure she has access to food and water at all times. Did you check for a slipped tendon? Is there any joint swelling? Mine didn't seem to be in pain when I initially thought injury and palpated the joints and bones. Mine had no swelling or visible deformities

Yes, I checked for all those things the best I could. I can't see or feel anything and she doesn't appear to be in pain on the leg.
This morning, she still cannot use the leg. The toes are all curled under and she holds it out in front of her. That's the best I can describe it.
There are not vets around here that deal much with chickens. The answer I get is "it's just a chicken". I'm going to try to call the vet I called when my little chick had a sour crop. She seemed to know more then most about chickens.

Thank you klf73.

Thanks for posting that link, Tiki. We all made some good contributions to it, and supported eachother thru the discovery period.

NO I haven't. Where do I get that? I read about it.

Do you mean my Kiddy? If so, Kiddy is fine. She was broody for months, hatched some fertile eggs given to me. She was normal and went broody again. She had an impacted crop for a couple days. For several weeks now, she has been perfectly normal KNOCK ON WOOD!! She's been laying, very active, good weight, healthy and talks a lot! I love Kiddy. She's a RIR bantam.
