Poor little buddy. ❤

Sort of surprises me she didn't know what was going on with her own animals though. 😶
Well she has been dealing with one horse who decided not to eat. She is old and suffers from an illness that I can’t name off the top of my head. And then one that has CPD. I believe though when I contacted her she hadn’t been down to the ducks at that point during the day. I don’t know that she was too worried because she has all the boys and girls separated from each other. But the only thing separating the drakes from the hens is a fence. She has about 40 breeding pairs (I’m not sure of the actual number now since she had the attack on her birds) and has done this before but she hasn’t had them do this, this early before either. These temps are REALLY warm for December, we normally stop seeing these temps in like early October. But since they were getting along great literally the day before I didn’t realize how quickly things would go south.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in. I have my 4 little Call Drakes and one Mallard/Rouen Drake and it has been warmer than usual here in Ohio also. So far all seems well as my pen abuts up next to my house and I can see them. How many drakes do you have? I have my nine big hens but I am hoping my drakes will not attack each other during mating season which I am hoping will be in the Spring. It will be 50 some here again today and 60 tomorrow then get colder again. Thanks for any info you can give me. I have never had Calls and don't know what to expect from them.

I have 2 boys and 2 girls. And honestly I think having more girls might be helpful. I just can’t get any until the spring and that will be more of a straight run but my odds are better than anything else. This is my first year also, my first set of Calls had more females in it but then I had the problem of bigger ones and smaller ones. I do know you have to keep drakes away from babies cause they can and will kill the babies. Which is why we had a plan for another pen but really thought we had more time. And you may not know that they are injured unless they are wet. Which I think helped me see his injuries..and his wings hanging. But the next day I couldn’t tell he was missing any feathers until I put him in my bathtub. He and one girl are currently spending half their day inside. Morning and night. The other set is out in their run in the morning and then in the coop in the after noon and night. But I think that is maybe why the lady I got mine from wouldn’t have seen any missing feathers…they may not have been wet. She doesn’t have a pond but a kiddy pool for them.

This picture is the next day. He is the one circled in red. They are a little dirty looking because I had straw in their kennel area. And he hadn’t had a chance to get wet…

I'm toying with not doing one of the breed pens I want to do and do some calls instead. Just haven't decided. Or put the trio with a chicken breed, but I worry about the drake if I do that.
If they're LF chickens, should be just fine. Would obviously depend on the drake and your supervision at first though.

Thanks so much for the info. I hope by my Hens all being larger things will go well in the spring but time will tell. I am sorry your one got beat up. It is a shame that you have to get them in pairs. I don't know how to get all of one sex other than drakes as most people want rid of them if they end up with too many. I just love my little boys. They make their little raspy quacks all day long but it doesn't bother anyone as they are so quiet. It's my big Hens with the big mouths. lol I hope that yours heals up nicely and that once it get colder out they leave each other alone. Where are you located? Our weather here in Ohio has been absolutely crazy!!!

Yeah. The supervision unfortunately is where it would go wrong. I'd put them with a bigger bird to try and limit issues, but I think I'll just either wait or decline a breed. I have like 3 months to ponder before I can even think about my breed eggs I wish to get, so I've got time
