Marking quail eggs

How do people mark their quail eggs so you know what pen they come from?

With my chicken eggs, I can use a pencil even on my darkest eggs, but I'm just not able to see the pencil on my coturnix quail eggs.

I received some eggs from a breeders (and they hatched out great) with what looked like a sharpie mark on them. I've read with chicken eggs you don't want to use markers because it might bleed through the shell. Is that not true with quails (or chickens for that matter)?

Just wondering how you keep your eggs organized because I haven't figured out a method that works and is easy for me.

I use surgical markers.
They come in blue & black. They are non toxic & hypoallergenic.
If you know someone who works in a hospital, you can probably get them for free or you could try ebay.

i had heard that you shouldn't mark eggs with permanent markers. I tried it once, had a 98% hatch rate on fertile eggs, now I always use sharpies on all my eggs. I always have great hatch rates, I have never once seen ink on the inside of a shell. Some will probably say differently, but from my personal experience there is nothing detrimental about using a sharpie on eggs.

I use washable crayola markers, but that's mostly because I color code everything and if there is a marker in the house, a kid will find it and draw an something irreplaceable.

I mark eggs from particular pens to see who is fertile and who is not. I use non-toxic sharpies. There are larger pores on the fat end of the egg so I only mark on the small end. I do not want to clog the pores in the fat end of the egg so the chick can breathe. If you have a cracked egg you can take it in a dark room and shine the flashlight through each end. It will look like little stars of light shining through. That will give you a good idea about the pores and where to mark.

What are sharpies? We don't have that brand here in Australia.
I have been using a very small permanent marker. I looked inside the egg shells and nothing has gone threw.
If you could tell me what sort of pen a sharpie is maybe I could try to track down something similar here.

It is just a permanent marker like you are already using I would assume.

If I did mark my eggs, I would use seperate egg flats for each pen. There's no way marker would show up on them, no matter what color the marker is! Normally I just toss them all in together.

We do have sharpies in Australia (well at least in Western Australia) I know officeworks has them, and I saw them at Woolworths the other day. I use these a lot for the kids craft work.
