Mars rover

Quote: I can only present to you that as previously mentioned, the dollars have been scaled back for NASA. It is all about balance. If you want to discuss what is pointless, tell me how much money was spent in AFghanistan and Iraq. THose wars have had devistating consquences to our economy on a number of facets. From the out right money on the war, to the care of returning military personnel, to the upheavel in the region. We still need that oil. A trip to Mars is priceless. It is fun, exciting and a wonder.

I know my grandfather spent many hours working hard, providing for his family and then some. He worked hard his whole life from teens to late 70's when he finally retired. Work work work. He almost didn't finish HS. But he ALWAYS had time to read National Geographic. And for those that don't read NG, it not only covers our Earth but also the cosmos. He expanded his mind and traveled the world. He put on slide shows for the extended family who did not travel. He shared his adventures. Life isn't just about putting food on the table or finding new resources. Every old culture made beatiful jewelrey and pottery and such. THese are the VERY old cultures, Early China and the precolumbians in South America. THe world would be a dreary place without pushing the boundaries, researching new technologies, making paintings and sitting through a production of The Lion King.

We have much to learn about the world and the universe. Not everything should be about money and resources IMO. While I am here on Earth, I enjoy the art of science and it broadens my world; it helps me understand how valuable my world is and how great God is. Keeping my nose to the grind wheel makes for a dull me. I am more content with life when I can experience the enthusiasm and the excitement of a creative adventure. Be it The Lion King, or a Mars landing.

For me this is why the landing is very exciting.

If you can get The Bumpy Road fixed in my town, I'd be grateful. It's the pits, or rather a pitfall of holes.

It's a twisted world when you are more than happy to wage war on the other side of the world but want to demonize NASA. I don't believe in a bloated defense budget, oil subsidies or multiple foreign wars... but I have to pay for it anyways. You can handle the Mars rover. With the rate we are developing new technology I believe it's a worthy investment to be number one in space exploration. I don't see how chasing 16 year olds with AK47s around the mountains of Afghanistan is doing anything to help us. Just philosophical differences I guess.

You do realize I'm opposed to the wars, right? They're a waste of money, and more importantly, a waste of lives. Don't accuse me of positions I don't hold. I'm criticizing NASA based on its own merits, or lack thereof. "Wonder" is not a good reason to waste tax dollars.

To Arielle, regarding National Geographic - I read it, too. I love it. And it's a private organization. It's not wasting money if people - customers - voluntarily pay for it, and get what they paid for. But when it comes to tax money, there needs to be a much better reason to spend it than "wonder." Take the Lewis & Clark expedition. It had a very, very practical purpose - to map out the Louisiana Purchase for further exploration and expansion. The explorers of old didn't get their government funding for the purpose of taking pretty pictures, they got their funding in order to bring back a valuable return, be it in territory, resources, or what-have-you.

Let me make myself clear again: if private citizens wish to spend their own money on less-than-practical things, go for it. I do it all the time, too. The government is a different story entirely. It is, by definition, spending other people's money that was forcibly taken from them, so it had darn well better bring back a good return.

I think they used some of the profit from the FED $79 billion in 2010 to pay for the Mars rover.

I for one am happy to pay my share of taxes. It plows the roads, it educates my kids. It pays my husbands salary. ANd he works very hard for every dollar he earns.

I didn't mean to say you were for a war. I was only trying to point out that sometimes our government does things that I consider assinine--and war is at the top of the list as far as I am concerned. Glad to have another who is anti war too.

I hear you . . . I just don't agree with you on the NASA exploration. I find it very cool.

Settle down, young Q9, I was more referring to chickened. You mirror Ron Paul on every single issue, I know what you positions you hold.
