MARYLAND THREAD!

Hello!

I have been reading from your forums for months now planning my new operation, here in Hereford, Maryland.

I joined, not only to share in your wealth of knowledge but to try to connect with people locally to source chicken related things. (Information, friends, feed, chickens)

Specifically, I am looking for where to buy my hens. I have poured months of research into this, and building my coop and run, and have decided on Ameraucanas as my main breed, with several other mixed breeds. My coop will be 4x8 with a 8x8 run.
How many can I happily have? And where should I post on this site to find someone who has Ameraucanas locally? I'd love to take a day trip to a farm/hatchery.

Thanks for your time everyone!

There is whitmore farm in Frederick county. http://www.whitmorefarm.com/ameraucana

Thank you for responding to my post. Whitmore farms appears to only sell day old chicks. I am looking for older juveniles or layers. Thanks anyway.

Should I post somewhere else?

someone here may have some on this thread or you can post in the wanted/for sale/trade forum, you may also find some in craigs list, just bought 2 laying hens from craigs list day before yesterday and already have eggs.....

Stellalunabird,
Hi! Do you want pullets because they are nearly or are full grown or just hesitant to raise chicks? Chicks are not extremely difficult to raise up. Most begin to lay within 4-5 months.
You may also want to followup on that post about the ones coming into the animal control from the trailer park. I would keep an eye out for pullets here and contact others to ask if they know someone who is selling or giving them away. It happens. Chicken math catches up with you pretty quickly. ;-D

Thanks!

I've been checking craigslist, but is haven't had my usual luck. Ha ha. Thanks though.

Any tips for someone first starting out?

I'm all excited.

You may find it difficult to actually find someone selling Ameraucana pullets. Whitmore Farms does sell hens sometimes but it's usually hens they are cycling out of their flock. You can still contact Will to ask if he will have any. Frankly, I would recommend chicks since you can tame them. Older birds tend to take longer to make friendly to you. With a 8x8 pen I wouldn't recommend anymore then 4-5 birds. It's not a very big pen.

Whitmore farm won't let you visit... I already called and asked them... At that time, I ruled them out. I ordered mine online from Meyer in Ohio... haven't received my chicks yet, but their online chat answered a lot of my questions... They are very sweet and helpful and have older chickens available... I will have 5 chicks of 5 varieties, my closest to you being and Easter Egger, which is a mutt chicken. If you call animal control, after May 14th they will have rescue chickens available. Not sure of any other local sources for Ameraucanas.

Just because I'm bored and was on craigslist looking for ducks, found this one selling 7 months old Americaunas as well as chicks. Should be less than an hour from you.

By the way, chicks are so much fun to raise.

For purebred Ameraucana pullets check Maryland Farmers Exchange and Maryland Poultry and egg swappers on facebook. Also the Maryland Poultry swap is next month in Sharpsburg.People sell purebred Ameraucana pullets there and lots of other birds and animals. Arrive early so they don't sell out. Whitmore will let you visit if you are buying chicks or anything else.

Well, I breed them, but I don't have any pullets and I don't really have a farm. But, I could hatch some in a couple of months and they may be laying by early next year - Ameraucana tend to take at least 7 months to begin to lay. Not ideal for you, I know. I'm also on the Eastern Shore. But, you could take a trip to the beach!
