MARYLAND THREAD!

Hi!

Sorry, no ducks. I had a friend who had some and, although I was impressed with their eggs, I wasn't impressed with their mess!

My neighbor may raise them, I'll ask him. Which breeds are you interested in?

Pekin, Muscovy or Rouen, I have a pond that's getting overgrown with algae I read that some eat it.

Hey my Maryland peeps,

Just started our little flock in Easton MD. We are within City limits off Dutchman's Lane. I don't know of anyone else in the area raising chickens in their backyard Anyone out there in our area? I'd love to see your flock and hear how your neighbors have reacted.

Hello,Were here in Easton also,Choptank Av.Weve had chickens here for three or four years now.We also raise different kinds of fancy pigeons.I haven't known anyone else here in town with chickens. We have twelve hens, and looking for a few more.Your welcome to give us a call,410-490-3759.

hi glen burnie, I am Margie in Severna Park. You are the closest I have found on this thread... how are your predators up there, I just read the predator chapter in my book and am freaked out worrying about foxes and hawks... and I think everyone has lost chickens to predators... we are only starting with 5. 1 loss is a big deal, especially if it is one of the kid's chickens.

I am searching foods tonight... where are the local farms that make fresh chicken feed... I live basically at the Bay Bridge... Hey, Glen Bunie and Calvert Counties, do any of you get farm chicken feed?

I go to the co op on 8th avenue in Glen Burnie. The man who owns it is very nice and I have been buying my feed from him since the beginning of my chicken raising. as far as predators... yes, there are fox around here too. I lost 3 hens to one 3 years ago. It was horrible. We moved the coop and the run closer to my house and reinforced the fencing and buried the fencing deeper in the ground. We also put rebar poles in the ground every few inches around the run. No problems since! I'm looking for more hens now, but considering pullets since we go camping and raising babies right now isn't feasible. Hopefully I'll find some on craigslist or on here that I can give a good home too.

I have a fox problem that is getting worse each month. My property is being surrounded by new development. I have new subdivisions on two different sides. They are pushing the wildlife on to my property. Good for the deer. But the fox are moving in as well.

The state's solution was to send me a year round fox hunting permit and told me to kill on site. Not very helpful. So I am investing in electric fences. Not cheap to put cover 5 acres of property with electric fence. Especially since I now what is coming: eventually those people paying 3 million+ for their mansions are going to start complaining about my roosters. They love hiking through my woods. But I already had one complaint and more are coming. Maybe I can train the foxes to chase them off the property?

Thanks, cool to know someone is already raising chickens here in town. If you have been doing for some time it would be safe to assume you have not run into any trouble with the city or neighbors.

Sense I posted here we have actually introduced most of our neighbors to 6 our little girls. They have all reacted positively. So I no longer worry about their reactions to them. We have also decided on a Hen house/Run set up. There are several shown on this site that are similar ("the taj majal", "the palace") that we are basing our coup on.

What kind of set up do you have? Have you posted pictures?

Thanks Glen Burnie! I will go by there today to check them out. DC, it is unbelievable that they would complain about your roosters when you were there first. I am sure you have county permission to have roosters. I hope you don't get innundated with people complaining. Thinking of you, hoping for the best...

I do have a fox in my yard and won't be bringing the chickens out in the yard before late morning when he is hopefully sleeping. I am also putting hardware cloth across the bottom of the coop. I will do the rebar thing too if necessary. Thanks everyone!

We used to have a fox problem on my old place but not here in town.I trap fox for a gamebird farm and some chicken houses.I live on the Eastern shore but work on the western shore from the bay bridge and up to Southern Md.Season doesn't open until November, but if any of you in the area are interested,I could remove some fox from your farms for no charge.just pm me.
