Anyone going to the Northeastern Poultry Conference? It's Jan 14th & 15th in Springfield, Mass. There will be a BYC table there, where BYCers can meet up and take a load off. Anyone willing to field questions at the table from the general masses for an hour or more is eligible for a 6 month GFM upgrade -PM Stoopid for details.

Hope to see you there! I'll be in my newly acquired blue (and man, is it blue!) BYC hoodie. -Martha

Wow - that's fantastic info and something that I'm going to try to organize for us to do together. I know my oldest son would love to make a day of that and that the rest of us would enjoy it as well! Thanks for passing that along!

I wish it was closer - maybe next year. Is it an annual conference and always around the same time of year?

Do you have a sense yet for what you want? If you just want some brown egg layers, you could try your closest feed store. Our local Southern States is going to order chicks from Mt Healthy Hatchery for delivery in late March. It sounds like you can preorder chicks or buy a few in store. They sound like most of the chicks will be spoken for, but there will be some available for purchase. You can give them your email and they will let you know when it is time to place your order if you want to. The varieties offered are the 5-6 most popular. They have the basics as far as supplies. Tractor Supply will probably also have chicks for sale. Their prices for feed might be better.

I was just searching some of the message threads here on BYC for the breeds I like. I'm hoping to find someone in the area breeding the kinds of chickens I like, and hope they will sell some chicks. I don't think I'm up for trying to hatch out eggs yet!! You can search here on BYC by state or by breed of chicken, etc.

There is going to be an Agricultural expo in Harrisburg PA early next month that should have lots of regional poultry. I sure would like to go but doubt I can this year. I think there may be a livestock & poultry auction weekly over near Frederick.
Good luck!

Yeah, I don't think we're up for hatching chicks yet (although I am certain my kids would want to!). We are hoping we can get some Marans because those dark eggs seem like they would be fun. I also really want to have a few that lay a pretty blue egg. We got 2 "Ameracaunas" (now we know that they are easter eggers really) and so one of them gives us a nice olive to sage green egg and the other one ended up being what I see as off white. So I guess we'll figure it out by spring! The expo in PA and auction in Frederick are good to know about though - I'll have to do some web searching on those. I just figured I'd ask folks on here what they knew of in the area. Thanks a bunch and have fun with your chickens!

Hi folks!
I'm in Cecil County, Maryland. The law here is That you need one acre to own anything other than cat's and dogs. I'm active in getting the law amended.

Hi,
Just checking in from Howard County, Maryland. We are in Glenwood. We have 40 chickens and 4 turkeys. My daughter is a 4H'er and will raise 2 market pigs this year. We also have broiler chickens in the spring and summer.
I did get an email from the "Fine Feathered Friends" club (4H) in Carroll County about the show in Westminster. We will be there, looks like alot of fun. I love looking at all the breeds of chickens that we don't have and the ones that we have. It is a great learning experience to go to these shows.

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to send a quick note to let everyone know that we have started an online petition to get the Baltimore County legislation changed to allow backyard chickens. Please send this to anyone you know in Baltimore County that supports backyard chickens. We need all the help we can get right now.

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/baltcochickens/

Also, our regular blog is at http://charmcitychickens.blogspot.com. You can also sign up to be on our email list as well. I try to send out at least one update a month, sometimes more if there is something to report.

Thanks!
Jay
