I am from Wilsonville, AL and received my first chickens last year. Started out with 8, but free ranging just gave the raccoons and hawks their daily food.
The flock right now is small, one buff orphington rooster, two heritage hens, a rhode island red, and a barred rock.
Whenever I needed information on chickens I used the Internet. I bought a book about raising backyard chickens and read before acquiring the chickens. I always get on the computer whenever I have a question about chickens to read other flock owner's answers to my questions.
My husband and I collect old cars and love to travel in our RV around the country. We have two indoor cats that travel with us. Now we have to have a "chicken sitter" when we travel.
The chickens are my nightly therapy. I let them out to free range while I keep an eye to the sky so that they will be safe. It is too funny how "Buddy" our rooster will get a grub and call the hens to come eat. He is so considerate to them. He is so spoiled and when I come out he comes running towards me. I give them watermelon and cantaloupe plus dried worms and scratch as daily treats.
