I first kept chickens 20 years ago when my family and I had a smallholding. We started with some 'rescued' white leghorns from a battery farm. Poor girls were so stressed to start with, but with love, attention and plenty of food they became wonderful members of our backyard community. We later adopted bantams, silkies and a gorgeous big rooster that may have been a coloured leghorn. We also had turkeys and a peacock.
Sadly we had to leave that lovely situation and move back to town. Now my children are grown and have lives of their own.
Last year my partner and I decided to take on 4 girls from a friend, who was moving house and wanted a home for her chickens. We had 3 Rhode Island Reds and a yellow leghorn. One of the reds passed away after an unfortunate accident but the remaining 3 girls have kept us well supplied with eggs in their 3m2 run and cosy house.
The neighbourhood cats think the chook run is great entertainment and are not aggressive towards the girls. Our black and white neutered tom. Mo, spends hours watching them when he's not playing chase up the tree with his 'girlfriend'.
I came across this website by accident a couple of months ago while searching for information and have enjoyed the emails since. Thanks to you, the team, for putting this together.
Other hobbies? I am a Toastmaster, an artist, a marriage celebrant and get my main income as a massage therapist. I enjoy playing the digeridoo every day and am an avid reader. Life is good.
