Mating rituals

I don't mean to breed them, I just have them together and since they are my first duck encounter, I'm a bit curious and impatient. I'm also afraid a tiny bit for the hens, because there are 2 drakes and only 3 hens. The thing with one drake is, that he's fat and quite slow to move. I'll see how he behaves. If I see any kind of gang raping, I'll trade him for another duck lady.

All the ducks are roughly the same age. The drake that is showing signs of love is the drake I incubated from egg and is extremely tame and very protective towards the flock. He chases away my dogs, sometimes he's more interested in chasing dogs than eating. He doesn't bite them hard though. He dives and bumps with his small feathery body into them, sometimes nibbling them. I have to decide if it's not just playing. Ducks usually don't even stand up if the dog runs around them, except the drake, he just started chasing.

I know! That's why I try to see how they behave. If I'm able to see when they start showing sexual behavior, I'll be able to see if anything goes wrong. The second drake is a neglected duckling I saved. He had severe feet issues and wasn't fed enough. I got it at 4 weeks and it didn't even reach size of my drake at 2 weeks. He ate everything he saw, without even drinking water - then he got fat and couldn't walk for almost a month. After a diet and when he reached his size, his legs strengthened enough so he can walk normally, but he's still slow. He doesn't make any sound, not even the male raspy sound. He did some time ago, so I know he's drake, but he's now completely silent. He's the black one on the photo above.

Thank you for all the feedback. By knowing duck behavior, I'll be able to see if I can keep both drakes. I have low expectations, but I do hope there will be no issues. :)

Best wishes and keep up the great Duck care and watching...

I see! And like everyone else said unless you get more hens you'll need to drop a drake! And birds don't "gang rape" lol the hen would just be double mounted but still not good nor detrimental however if you build a relationship with the extra drake, keep him! There's will, there's a way!
