Quote: Mine only gripes when he thinks I am spending more time online than with him. He does most of the feeding & watering & I make a round to check on everyone every day to make sure he doesn't miss anything I need to know about. He starts griping about how he "does everything" around here until I remind him who pays all of the bills & that a lot of our income is from the birds & the sales & swaps I do. He has seen me sink money into birds & turn around a week later & sell off everything I just bought except the few from the lot that we actually wanted for us & sell for more than triple what I paid for everything. I don't buy stuff unless I know I can make a profit from it. He also watched me sell $100 in like 8-9 birds a few days ago. He wasn't complaining them.

Mine is only home on the weekends cause he drives dump truck so I do all the feeding and watering of the farm and he helps when he Is home on the weekends. He always loves it when I bring him a newly hatched duckling and set it on his workbench in the garage.

He also about dies when I sell a pair of snowy call for $100-$300. He always says I can't believe someone would pay that for ducks! I always remind him there was no complaints when I originally paid that much for mine. I tell him quality sells and always keep your rare breeds down in numbers. If you get to many than everyone is going to end up with them and then they are not even going to pay their own feed bill. I love to keep less common/rare and harder to raise/hatch breeds but you have to look at it from a business side too.

I have a friend doing mandarins & calls right now, but he didn't know much about birds when he got them & way over paid for poor quality calls. Now he's wondering why no one will pay what he wants for the babies. I keep telling him to just sell them for whatever he can get out of them & not sink any more money into the babies than he absolutely has to but he doesn't listen. He has 15 call babies right now that are almost 3 weeks old & more that just hatched & more in the incubator. He has no room to grow out all of these babies & is sinking money into them like mad with expensive feed & everything else. He's going to end up with over $50 each just in feed in these babies before I finally get him talked into selling them. (He wants to see them fully feathered before he sells.) He will be lucky to get $10 each out of them at 6 weeks old because bills & bodies are both HUGE. I told him to sell them now for $7 each & just take what he can get. Once they grow out he still won't get the $15 he was asking at hatch for them & didn't get. He thinks he will get $30-50 each out of them in another 3-4 weeks. Not going to happen. I would not have paid more than $10 each for the parent birds as adults.

I am having the same issue with Josh's sister. She saw me selling snowy ducklings less than 3days old for $15-$20each and she ran off and bought what someone told her was snowy calls without knowing any better. They are mixed color calls. She has been selling the babies but I told her she is not going to get what I was getting because she didn't search for quality birds. She has let them go for $5each. I told her this year if she was willing I would possibly sell her a snowy pair at a reduced cost to help get her started but I don't know if she is going to be willing to pay $50 just to cover feeding and growing them out. I also know she isn't in it for the birds she just wants to make money off of them. I know we all raise them to help make some cash on the side but she wants to hatch and sell every egg she gets. I can't quite explain to her they are expensive and sell good because not everyone and their brother has 50 pairs of them and is overrun with babies. If she hatches 50eggs a year and ends up with 25pairs (I know that is not really what happens, there is always more of one sex than the other) than she sells those 25 pairs locally than she just flooded the local market with snowy calls and everyone is going to have cut throat prices next year just to get rid of the ducklings, then there goes her side business out the window. I guess some people get it and others just don't.

Quote: I haven't even had a chance to hatch many of my babies for myself this year. I have been shipping so many eggs that so far I only have 2 call babies from my own eggs so far. I have 3 more set for this week & another 6 set for the end of the month but likely won't get to keep many.

My friend went & got polish eggs from someone yesterday & then started looking at what hatcheries sell them for & shipped all of his eggs to me saying he wasn't going to bother with them for just $7-10 per chick. Heck, I grab stuff up that I can sell for those prices at hatch!!! That's a mouth I don't have to feed very long & can make decent profit from. Silkies, polish, calls...a couple other breeds...I have trouble keeping in stock & people don't even question my prices on them.

I haven't hatched any of my calls yet either! I have 2due to hatch Saturday. One snowy and I think the other is a grey but don't remember. Then I have 8to hatch of snowy and grey the 17and then 3 more calls after that. I'm filling an order on Greys now than the rest are mine! I've got enough to ship their order but hate to ship on a Thursday so I'm collecting and waiting until Saturday. I am collecting my snowy eggs and going to set them once I get 10 or so saved up. Im at 6 - 7 now. In between orders and these swaps I have hatched my own EE and pekins and a couple SBEL but I sold all the EE, pekins, and SBEL chicks already.

I'm going to be a greedy call owner this year and keep most of what I hatch. :D

Woohoo got eggs coming :). I sent one box sending other out by mon.. Been busy here graduation for daughter, and I received my sultan chicks I ordered...lol....boyfriend so goin to kill me..

He shouldn't gripe to much when he sees what shipped today. If I remember correctly, he is the one that waanted these.
