MAY 2016 "Land of the Free Because of the brave!" Hatch-a-Long Hosted by, Mike & Sally

Candled the eggs due to hatch on 5/14 of the royal palm turkey eggs looks like it will be 1/8 developing others look clear still. Of the runner duck eggs it looks like 5 maybe 7 of 13. 6 look clear for sure. Crossing my fingers that the 1 turkey and at least 5 ducks hatch.

When you get the eggs, put as many under her as she can cover. Then take one away. My understanding is that a bantam Orpington can cover quite a few!

Last time I had a broody Orpington she only sat on 6. This hen is smaller than the last hen though, so we'll see.

I have 5/5 isbars hatched!!!!! One had trouble, sticky chick. Have given it vitamins and probiotic. Poor thing is still weak. Hope it pulls through!

Only have 1/4 Marsh Daisy eggs but 2 I am 90% sure quit before lock-down. The last one may still hatch, but no sign yet. Will leave all 3 in for a while but don't have high hopes. The air cells were bad to begin with.

Time to invoke jealousy. For dinner tonight my loving husband has graced me with a steak stuffed boneless porkloin, covered in jalapeños and baby carrots, topped with Swiss cheese and wrapped in bacon. This has been lovingly seasoned for 24 hours before going into a perfectly heated smoker for 5 hours. My sides include cheesy broccoli and colly flower, corn on the cob, stuffed bell peppers and smoked shrimp that sautéed in a bed of peppers and onions. This all sits on top of a bed of yellow rice with sausage and onions. Sweet tea will nicely complement this delectable meal. For desert I will be eating a HOMEMADE strawberry and banana cheesecake and fresh brewed coffee.

Anyone else hungry now??
sounds like a lovely southern meal. I'd have me a fat tbone steak, fried in bacon grease, with a brown crunchy crust, and medium rare, with buttermilk biscuits and asparagus and baked potato with chives and butter, and huckleberry pie ala mode.

Oh yes. I feel like I should roll away

Lol yess! Worth it though!! And i can't believe how little you spent!! Here that would be well over $100, possibly closer to $200. Though a lot of the ingredients are pretty cheap so maybe not. But still. Not $25 lol But we live in a town and about 2 minutes from 2 different grocery stores (and lots of other stuff, most notably CVS, Dollar Tree, and McDonald's LOL) and in the other direction, 15 minutes from more grocery stores and one of those club ones and Walmart and shopping sooo... we just buy everything hahah

But this year I'm going to try to grow vegetables. Kinda went overboard on buying the seeds...

but I think it will be fun. Plus these are our first chickens which we got in October. Pulled out the egg recipe books tonight.

I'd love goats or ducks but probably can't for a while or not here. But maybe eventually. I'd want brush clearing and pets for the goats and pets for the ducks but maybe I'd eat the eggs and maybe they'd eat pests. But so that probably makes it even more unlikely, they gotta contribute somehow and I don't need or want goat milk atm.

I think it would be fun to be more self sufficient but like I said, it's not a necessity for us but I definitely still want to. Plus eventually I want to move to where it will be a necessity and I need to practice.

I also need to change my eating habits. I buy junk all the time or eat out which won't fly. Most of the stuff isn't even possible to make ourselves anyways though

Down another egg, one of the detatched air cell embryos died. I'm not very impressed with the breeder. I've lost most of the orpington eggs, are they generally a hard to hatch breed or am I just dealing with poor genetics?

That crazy hen is out for blood!!

I finally moved her and the eggs into a separate space because she had a bunch more new eggs under her this evening. When I did she about tore the skin off my hands and managed to draw blood before I could get her head covered. She is in the same pen but has her own private space. She can see out if she wants too and they can see in, but they can't slip more eggs into her clutch. I go through all the trouble of giving her a private little broody-hen-condo and this is how she repays me. I hope that she doesn't freak out and attack the chicks when they start hatching. I may have to pull the chicks if she does go completely crazy.

I am sorry you are going through this, but I am right there with you.

Broody #11 decided she was going to quit. It has been a week or so ( I have lost count of all of them). She had 3 dozen eggs under her! Well, I thought, I will deal with this in the morning. In the morning she decided she would sit again, so I moved her to where she couldn't get more eggs in my feed room with 3 other broodys. That's when she decided she didn't want to sit. We had some choice words and I told her she was just going to have to stay in that room whether she sat or not. When broody # 8 got up, she mistakenly got in #11's box on the return trip. #11 is running around squawking and my good eggs #8 had been sitting on are now broodiless. Eventually #11 gave up and sat on # 8's eggs. Poor #8 is going to have a longer sit now.
#4 hatched 5 chicks today that I can see and is still sitting.

#12 is a very good mom and when the queen hen decided to lay in her nest she laid down next to the box for her to finish. Instead, I drug Queen hen out by the tail and #12, who is bottom of the pecking order, got back on.
#13 is flirting with sitting, but has gotten up at night 2 days in a row. She is SFH and I actually would like for her to sit, but NO!

I may go completely crazy...

Had eggs still on the turner that are supposed to hatch tomorrow. I didn't know what day, besides Mother's Day, it was.

Just got the ones that hatched on the 7th in a brooder today. I have no idea where I will put these. At least they didn't hatch with the turner still on.
