May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

I was 2 for 3 on my ducklings last time. I call that a win win. I am still not sure if the chocolate duckling is a male, but i don't mind having 2 male ducks when I have 6 females. If the chocolate is a male, he will make me some pretty offspring next year.

I can't seem to tell on chicken chicks what they are. I know what I am looking for, but waterfowl it's pretty obvious when they are a male.

These little polish squirts are ridiculously cute. I am really liking the yellow and silver one.

Oh, does that mean you can get some autosexing ducklings from that choco fellow? I seem to recall chocolate drake over, was it blue duck? Gives you autosexing ducklings? I’ll have to go look that up again... lol.
I usually check my ducklings when they’re closer to a week or so. Easier to see little drake boy parts and I feel that the duckling is a little more robust at that point. :)

I am not sure. The other two are blue or silver, you can see it in my avatar. They are way bigger now though. I need to get outside and do pictures, but I want to do it with my husbands camera. It's an old school camera and I have no idea how to use it, but it takes very good pictures.

Yeah, so a chocolate drake over pretty much any other color duck will give you autosexing ducklings; but the duck’s color will affect the colouring that’s passed to the ducklings, so it may dilute rather than just being chocolate ducklets. And white throws a giant wrench into the genetics too. Haha. But it’ll be interesting to see either way. :)

my Swedes looked very similar to the one in your profile pic - the one (the snapping turtle she-devil) turned out to be a darker blue; but the one I kept wound up being something like a splash. She’s a light blue with iridescent dark feathers mixed throughout. of course, she’s crested so the genetics there are already kind of screwy. Haha.

These ones are light blue with dark blue spots in a couple of places then the white bib.

The chocolate one has dark brown circles on its chest and a couple other dark brown spots. When it was a day old it looked black with white markings on its face. It changed a lot.

I have a chocolate muscovy too names Coco. She hasn't laid any eggs or she hides them. I know she is a female because my pekin drake loves to mate with her. Plus she doesn't mate with anyone but the drake so it must be a she.
