May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

So it already had broke through the outer shell. And then it seems to have been cemented inside the shell. I’m trying to ungoo the baby so it can move out of the shell. It’s like a mix of shrink wrap and yolk glue. We shall see how this goes, I am hands off I haven’t helped a baby like this but watching it breath and chirp but stuck seems mean

Like fortcluck suggested, antibiotic ointment, coconut oil, or even Vaseline on any membrane that might be leftover and stuck to the chick. You can break away the top of the shell and any lose membrane to allow for the chick to push the rest of the way out if you no longer see full blood vessels.

We put the 4 pullet leghorns, Death Comet, and 2 light brahmas with the big group. Hopefully they’ll do good.

The Batam Brahma is still in the nesting box on eggs. The Cochin pushed her to lay her egg 🙄 I’m getting tired of this already and it’s been only 24 hours.

It's going to be a very long 21 days for you and your broodies. :lau

We did it! I used a gauze rag and warm water to help moisten it’s inner membrane better and piece by piece we were free! Now it’s nuzzled in a lightly moist cloth on my hot pad in my lap

My little belly issue baby, seems to be struggling. It had a very active first day. Was running around doing all the normal duckling things. This morning it was droopy and latrgic. I can’t seem to get it to eat or drink today. I have managed to get a few drops of b complex and nutria-drench. It’s breathing is slower, it never seemed to really fluff up right.

anything else I should do?

What was wrong with it's belly? I may have missed it. I've missed a lot in this hatch-a-long. Was it a hernia? Keeping the brooder extra clean and putting chlorhexidine or antibiotic ointment without pain relief on the navel can help prevent infection. Since it's acting lethargic just keeping it warm and comfortable and dripping some of your multivitamins on the bill to hopefully give but a little boost. I hope it pulls through for you!

When I woke up yesterday it was out of the egg and had the shell stuck to the belly via membrane. It has this lump where it was a hernia I am pretty sure. It still has a lump which has scabbing on it. I have been applying ointment to the herniation.
