May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

When I woke up yesterday it was out of the egg and had the shell stuck to the belly via membrane. It has this lump where it was a hernia I am pretty sure. It still has a lump which has scabbing on it. I have been applying ointment to the herniation.

You're doing everything you can then! Sometimes they just don't make it regardless of what we do to help. The scabbing over is actually a good thing though. Fingers crossed for your duckling! :fl

All the ducklings in this hatch are hatching extremely late. So I am crossing my fingers that just one of these guys makes it because the first one out is wild and crazy, plus needs a friend.

2 of 6 have hatched. AC over Ancona, and over a partridge EE. Ancona baby is looking like her mother. EE is too wet to tell, but may be taking after his father. They went from one little pip hole to hatched and complaining in less than an hour. The others are not making any moves yet, but its still early. I set three days worth of eggs under the broody on the 4th, 5th, and 6th. I expected them to hatch on the 25th, 26th, and 27th, so the rest are not late. Photos when they're more presentable.

I had my first external pip at 10:30 this morning I’m staying away from my house so I don’t think about it 😂

This is our first time hatching chicks with an incubator since we do not have a broody hen. One of the chicks is not in the correct position, but has pipped through the membrane and is still breathing. What should I do? Thank you in advance for helping...

Just keep monitoring it and watch that the other chicks in the incubator do not roll it onto it's pip hole. It could take up to 48 hours for that chick to start zipping. If you can see it's beak and it looks like it is chewing, it is still absorbing it's yolk sac and not ready to hatch yet. It is hard to stay hands off at this point, but most will go ahead and hatch on their own if you just give them the time. The only one I have lost that has pipped in the wrong spot was one that the hatched chicks kept rolling onto the pip hole.

Thank you so much! The chicks did roll it once into the pip hole and I was able to flip it back over by briefly putting sanitary plastic tubing through one of the big air holes in the incubator to flip it back over.

This bird has been my love for many years. I gave her to a good friend last year because I was going on a vacation for 2 weeks and wanted her cared for. I got 2 of her eggs, (one dropped out of the running, then 5 days later she gave me 2 more. So the first egg is due 26th,(Monday 25th but this incubator has been running one day off) and the other 2 are due 31. I am over the moon, and swore I will not candle.:th(hen's name is Greyslyn, and my husband just came up with a chick name for it when it hatches.."frost") I always need names.
