May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

Two of the blue birchen Marans have hatched. Photo of the “blue“ blue birchen in the drying incubator with the remaining silkies! There is a “black“ blue birchen just hatched in the incubator, will have to wait and see how the others progress! You guys are right about Marans taking their own sweet time to hatch! There’s about so far 12 hours between each egg compared to the silkies who all seemed to pop out at once!:love

Peeping in the eggs this morning! Fingers crossed I’ll have some external pips when I get home today. Otherwise they’ll all be getting some safety holes to be on the safe side, since they all had internally pipped sometime yesterday. I’m especially concerned about the giant air-celled one. Not sure it’ll be able to externally pip properly with the shape and size of the cell...

My broody has failed as a carer. I took the eggs away from her about a week ago and finished incubating them inside (too much fighting between hens for the best nest box). She had decoys and was faithfully sitting on them. I've tried introducing a couple of chicks to broody, but she's not having any of it. I guess I'm going to raise these babies too. I already have one brooder with two week olds and now another brooder for the new ones. The last chick has pipped and his siblings are awaiting his arrival. What a fun hatch along its been!
