May 2020 Hatch-A-Long

What I don't want (you know I wasn't judging). We enable.

I have mutts, Barred Rocks, Golden Comets, Ameracunas (sp), White Rocks, Green Queens (production green layer), and a Silver Laced Wyandotte Roo.

I want Blue and splash Maran, creme legbar, Delaware, light Sussex, light Dorkings, Dominiques, and a New Hampshire Roo (that is nice). The latest addition to the list is Guniea Fowl, I believe that is someone's fault on this hatch-a-long.

Once I've acquired my list (I will of course change my mind, no wait that isn't right). I'll stop hatching mutts. :)

Lets here everyone else's, To get list. :D
I want lavender and blue Brahmas just because it’s a really big chicken.

I want death layers but they are in the incubator
I also have lavender Americannas

then for ducks I would love a flock of Australian spotteds and maybe even miniature silver Appleyards.

After having 10 chicks chain hatching yesterday, I only had one hatch today and it was rough! Currently chilling in the incubator in a cup, it keeps falling on its back and has curled toes (oh and umbilical cord was still attached to its shell ...). Toes are taped, hopefully a night in the cup will help...

Finally got the chance to candle the 6 remaining eggs and no internal pips, peeps, or movement. Maybe they will surprise me yet :jumpy

Advice needed. Babies are hatching! First time chicken owner (got my chickens 9 months ago from a hatchery), first time broody hen. Never expected them to hatch. She chose to hatch them in her favorite nesting box, when I tried to separate her from the flock prior to the hatch, she became very upset, so I put her back where she was comfortable. 2/3 chicks hatched late this afternoon. Now tonight, the other four chickens are sitting on the back roosting bar staring at her! They never sit on that particular bar and I am crossing my fingers they are only curious and not wanting to eat the newly hatched babies. First thing in the morning I am planning on dividing the upper coop box so she can be alone with her babies... newbie mistake but there are so many different opinions on hatching/raising/keeping chicks. Just hope I don’t wake up to 3 eaten babies... my other four chickens are so nice and tame I kinda assumed they would continue to pay her no attention.
Anyway you can separate your broody hen with the chicks? I wouldn’t trust the other chickens especially if you’re not sure. Even if you have an old dog kennel or something like that, put her in someplace safe overnight until you can get the coop separated. I am by no means an expert in any of this but that is what I would do. Will wait and see if someone more experienced adds anything.Good luck and congratulations on your Littles!🐣😊

Alternately you can separate the other chickens from her, as she is happy in the space!

So today is both a happy and sad day.

I ended up with four ducklings from my Aztecs that I have been waiting for impatiently for in the last month.

the sad was I lost the two weak ducklings passed over the afternoon. So I only have the one duckling that hatched on Friday.

Here is the last baby that hatched tonight.

4 eggs hatched 8 left to go.

OK my experienced chicken friends, I need help. The Marans chick I had to assist that was malpositioned is walking on it hocks in the incubator. I was thinking to wait and see how it is doing in the morning, but was also reading up on ortho for chickens and thought I should try hock cushions with cotton rounds and putting it in a cup. Would that help? It seem active and healthy otherwise. I would hate to miss the opportunity to help this little one! Any ideas?:)

Put it in a cup and give it therapy that way. It’ll work it’s legs.
